Sigma 30mm F1.4 Ex Dc Hsm

Any one have experience with this lens.

I'm still hoping for a FA 28mm Pentax, but this might do.

A lot of information on this lens here. It looks like a really nice lens if you get a good copy.

Not for pentax, but I used to have a copy for Nikon when I had my D200 way back when. I found it to be an okay lens. I have the 31 limited and other than build quality, the perspective will be similar. The thing I did remember about the sigma though was that it focused quietly and quickly, and was pretty smooth. The pictures were sharp in the centers, and maybe a little less sharp at the edges/corners. The contrast was good, but I didn't find it to be as pleasing at the 31 limited. It felt way more bulky and large than the 31 limited also, but I didn't have them side by side to compare.

For the money, I think it is a fine lens though. If I didn't have the pentax limited, I'd definately consider this as an alternative if I wanted the focal length.

Plus it's faster than the limited with a 1.4 aperature.

Dave, I don't have the 30mm but I do own it's wider brother the 24mm EX DG f1.8. Really like the lens. Fast, the lens is tack sharp from about 4.0 on and quite sharp even at 1.8 tho it does fall off a bit at the edges. Good color and contrast. The bokeh is OK but not spectacular. I would imagine that the 30mm would be about the same. The 24 is a big lens tho.
Pros: sharp, extremely sharp above 4.0; good color and contrast. Relatively inexpensive.
Cons: Big lens, bokeh while OK, cannot compare to Pentax lenses.

Here's my tiny bit of experience with this lens, which on paper seems the ideal lens.

I bought a used one off Amazon recently, and returned it for a refund after a few days' use. The auto-focus was just totally off -- the principal problem was back-focusing, but sometimes it would front focus as well. Completely unusable. (I have two other Sigmas, and this is the only time I've encountered a problem with one).

Even apart from that problem, I found that the lens was just OK. Yes, it's quite sharp even at f/1.4 in the center. But there was just something 'missing' about the rendering. I can't describe it other than as 'bland' -- the images just didn't do anything for me (even when in perfect focus). And the images taken by this lens that I've seen posted on various forums confirm this, at least for me.

Like another poster above, I also have the Sigma 24mm f/1.8 (which, unlike the 30mm, is a full-frame lens and thus somewhat larger). Now, the 24mm lens is quite nice -- very sharp, extremely close focus abilities, and nice rendering and color.

I have heard similarly nice things about the Sigma 28mm f/1.8, which is in the same 'family' as the Sigma 24mm, so that would be my suggestion if you are looking for something around that focal length. Pity Pentax 28mm autofocus primes are so hard to find ....

Good luck!

Take a look at Sigma 30/1.4 images here:
Picasa Web Albums - Albertas, 865217085 - Milda ir Kest...
There is some EXIF data there. Vignetting was added with the Photoshop.

By coincidence, I happened to be looking at the Flickr group for this lens last night and spent a little time browsing through the photo pool. To be honest, I was halfway hoping to spot a few images that would ignite the LBA fires and make me want it. I didn't see any.
