outdoor soccer: DA 55-300 or 50-200mm WR?

Until recently, I had Kx with the couple of inexpensive 70-300mm lenses Quantaray 70-300mm and Promaster 70-300mm
for shooting kids outdoor soccer. Both are OK lenses, but pretty soft on the long end.

Few days ago I jumped to K5 and start planning to upgrade my "zoom".
Having weather sealed body, I was thinking about DA 50-200mm WR to keep shooting in the rainy weather,
but 200m end kind of concerns me.
Looking at the reviews, I really like DA 55-300 as it is much better lens overall.
So, now I am stuck with dilemma
If I get 50-200mm how much will I miss 200-300 mm range?
If I go for 50-300 - how much will I miss weather resistance?

I am not planning to shoot in heavy rain, but rather fog and little drizzle, can 50-300 survive that ?

Any input would be appreciated

The 55-300 is what you want for an inexpensive telephoto. A camera condom is less than $10. A small towel is less than that :-)

I think you would miss the 200mm-300mm range rather than WR when shooting soccer.
In bad weather just use a lens sleeve or even a plastic bag on the 55-300

I shoot my sons soccer too and I get a LOT of use out of the 200-300 range of my DAL 55-300 (which is optically identical - quick shift and metal mount). I hear you about the WR because I just got a K5 too. Go back through your photos and look at the focal lengths of your favorites. Are they <200?

Well, some of them < 200, but much more are around 250-270 ....
I got the point , thanks.
After all ...it is not that rainy in Texas

Thanks!!

You probably do not want to hear that DA* 60-250 is great lens with AF lots faster and more precise than DA 55-300 has.

I want to hear that as I've got both lenses (the 60-250/F4 only since mid year). Unfortunately I got the K5 just after soccer season ended, so I won't be able to try the K-5 with the 60-250/F4 until March 2012.

To borysr, I've shot junior soccer for 3 years now with a K20D (TAv, raw, ISO100-1600) & 55-300/F4-5.8 (2.5 years) & now a 60-250/F4 since July. It was OK, but often I got a OOF shot due to the camera focusing on the background between two players rather than on either player.

I had problems on a bleak day in June 2011, with 5 matches, where the last match was late in the day and the light wasn't good enough. Pushed the ISO to 2000-3200 (not a good idea on the K20D), dropped the shutter speed to 1/320s (a recipe for disaster with soccer) and even started to use less telephoto, trying to get a bigger aperture from the variable aperture lens.

Here's a 300mm FL shot, 1/320s, f/5.8, ISO2500. That's the exposure setting for a light level of LV 8.6. There's not much detail left:

Now with the K-5 and the constant f/4 lens, I'm expecting to be able set a ISO range of 80-3200, and maybe pushing it when needed to ISO4000-4800. This will give me 2 stops extra at the long end without pushing, hopefully better AF and much better capability to lift the dark faces & bodies of shadowed players.

BTW, the 20110827 game, included in the link above, was shot in drizzling rain. I had the K20D & DA* 60-250/F4 in the rain for 70 mins.

Dan.

The shot is quite underexposed. No wonder you have trouble with the noise. But a good catch otherwise.

Glad to be of help. When I looked at my son's soccer photos I found a bunch clustered at 85-135 and even more at 250-270 too. I really like the software that will analyze your EXIF data and allow you to review your shooting habits in greater detail. Impressions are often way off, IMHO, from what actually happens.

Ah, but when it does rain.........

Well, if I had money to buy DA*60-250, I wouldn't be asking which to pick 50-200 or 55-300. I would probably buy all three.

But thanks for the comment anyway

Well I do some soccer rescently.

With DA*300mm:

With Sigma 70-200mm @200mm

So for reach I would choose the 55-300 if it is in your budget, but only use it in the range up to 250mm. Luckey you that is also the better lense optical. Making it the better choice.

I guess somewhere in the middle of the two. This shot is from a small serie where they where running along side keeping almost the same distance from me, so only on time focus and followed it with the camera. AF-S with centre point.

I think you would miss the extra range, and it really does not rain much around here anymore like you said. The IQ is also better on the 55-300.
