Lens recommendation

Looking for a suggestion of a lens to fill the gap left by the 18-55mm kit lens. I have a 10-24mm Tamron at one end and a Sigma 70-200 f2.8 at the other. Would a 35mm prime lens - giving me a ~ 50mm be a good fit between my two other lens? Any recommendations on a 35mm prime? These would go on my K20D or K-5.

thanks,

Do you not have the kit lens?

You could get either:
DA* 16-50mm vs. Sigma and Tamron 17-50mm F2.8 Comparison - Introduction- PentaxForums.com

Or the Sigma 24-70mm, which would perfectly fill the gap:
571109 Sigma 24-70mm f/2.8 EX Aspherical IF EX DG HSM AutoFocus Zoom Lens for Pentax SLR's & Digital SLR's - USA Warranty

Some ideas:

Zoom: Tamron 28-75/2.8

Primes:
DA 35/2.4
Sigma 30/1.4
Samyang 35/1.4 (MF)
FA 50/1.4
Sigma 50/1.4

Which prime to get depends on which focal length you use more. I tend to use 50mm more than 30mm.

Also consider DA40/2.8 Limited.

I believe a nice prime would fill the gap well. Depending on you budget it can be anything between DAL35 and FA31. I think the FA43 is almost perfectly in the middle - what do you think?

One cheap option: F35-70/3.5-4.5. One 3-zoom kit for my K20D consists of the Tamron 10-24, F35-70, and FA100-300/4.7-5.8. If you want to spend more money, Pentax has three 35s, a 31, and a 40, all splendid lenses. If you want to save money, many fast manual-focus primes can still be found used cheap: various Vivitar|Tamron|Sigma 28mm's in f/2-2.5-2.8; the occasional 24mm; quite a few 35s. Tell us your budget and we'll tell you how to spend it all. Good luck!

Although not a prime you might want to consider a Tamron 28-75 F2.8. It completes the kit and is a good all round lens

If you go for a prime, this would be your 'standard' lens and you really have to think which lens allows you to take the most photos in various circumstances. For some people this is a 40 or 43, for some other people a 35, others again 30 or 31 and there are people who even prefer a tad wider like 28.

In my opinion, your other lenses become 'specialist' lenses in case your standard prime does not cut it (you really need something wider for e.g. architecture or something longer for wildlife or kids sports).

Although I'm in the camp that prefers the wider side (28-31), I do not think that you can really go wrong if you give DA-L35/2.4 a try. It's relatively cheap and (from hearsay) good IQ. You can always invest more money at a later stage if you find that it's too limiting (wrong focal length or you find that you prefer a zoom).

The 35/2.4 is a terrific little lens and the best value in the Pentax prime lens lineup right now among new lenses IMHO. After the kit lenses, I first went with a Sigma (rebagged as a Quantaray) 28-90 macro lens based on a very informative thread here:
https://www.pentaxforums.com/forums/lens-clubs/79149-cheap-auto-focus-28ish-8...lens-club.html

Very solid performer with fast AF and the added benefit of having 90mm macro and all for $35. Just saying that there are a LOT of alternatives out there and knowing what you want to do with the lens and having a budget in mind drives which one is the "right choice". If money were no object then I'd pick one of the * lenses at f2.8. When money is a serious limit then lenses like my Quantaray are fine solutions. Good luck with your choice.
