Unknown Pentax and Lens spotted in Kruger Park

Hi All,

Just got back from a two week Holiday in the Kruger Park. My wife and I were having dinner in the camp restaurant and I noticed another couple sitting outside were using Pentax. The husband had a K10D (I know this camera very well) and an older 300mm FA 4.5...

His wife/partner was using a larger bodied camera that I first thought was a Canon as it just had more of that shape. Larger than the K10D but smaller than a 1D. The lens looked a bit like a Sigma 50-500. About at long or slightly longer than the 300 FA 4.5 but much thicker like all new SDM type lenses...

I got up to go over to speak to them but they were just leaving so I did not end up talking to them. As they turned and walked away I noticed that the partners Lens had Pentax written on the lens cap!

It was not a 60-250 as that has the gold lettering, so I have no idea what lens it was... also if that was a pentax Lens, then what camera body was it attached to?? something larger than a K10D... (and no it wasn't a 645D either and yes it was digital as they were looking at the screen on the back earlier)

They seemed to be travelling with 4 Japanese guys who also left soon afterwards.

Wish now I had gone after them and asked about the camera and lens!!

With all the rumours doing the rounds again maybe this was a new body and new lens they were testing?

Cheers,
Gordon

Sounds like it might have been an adapted medium format lens.

Do any of the 645 lenses have the grip handle?

This lens looked much more modern. smooth sides on it... will try and do a search...

Is there any chance that the wife had simply 'acquired' on of her husband's lens caps, and neither the lens nor body were Pentax? ;P

Yes very possible... though even if that were the case, I am battling to find a lens that looks exactly like it...

He he he

And no hoanpham... definitely not like that... much larger lens... with straight smooth sides finished off in black, ie no traditional focus ring that I could see?

Picture the Canon EF 70-200mm f/2.8L USM in basic shape (straight body with the carry handle)... make it completely black and remove the focus grips so the outer body of the lens is smooth, and make it larger...

True, of course, but how does that differ from many other threads in this forum?

I'm curious if Kruger Park is home to the South African Yeti, and if he is believed to shoot Pentax. Big camera for big hands, and all that.

PS: I enjoyed the trip to Wikipedia and a few other sites on Kruger Park. Seems to be a great place!

Probably the best place for a local yeti... Ha ha ha

The couple sounded German? They certainly weren't locals...

Yep Kruger is one of the best places, wildlife like the Serengeti but far more civilised and accessible...
