Unmatched? Hardly. The Takumars are even smoother. Modern Cosina lenses are smoother still. My Sears 50/1.7 is indistinguishable from the K/M lenses I used - it actually feels even better built.

You are comparing an AF lens whose focusing ring is loose so that the AF motor doesn't have to fight a lot of friction, with a MF lens that has an amortized movement, so it doesn't slide away at the slightest touch when you just want to preset focus at a given distance. Sounds to me like you're describing this difference and not stiffness. Stiffness would mean encountering actual difficulty with the rotation of the ring, such that it becomes obvious you are making an effort to rotate the focusing ring.

Yeah I thought it could be that but I wasn't sure how to describe it without writing a lot.

Thanks for clearing that up though.
