FA31 + 49mm filter

Hi

I have a few 49mm filters (B+W) which I have used extensively on my 15/40/70 setup.

I am wondering for my FA31 if I was to use a step down from 58mm to 49mm, would these filters still work okay without any vignetting (using K5)?

Thanks

A better question would be if the step-down ring would even fit, since normally the filter rests well inside the built-in lens good.

Some of us have got creative and stacked empty 58mm rings (several) partly to make the hood more restrictive and partly to allow us to mount a filter outside the inbuilt hood.

The OP's question is very relevant to my situation, I used to use a DA15/FA35/DA70 combo that had all the same filter ring sizes, now with the 31 replacing the 35, its become the odd man out.

I have to see if I have a 58 to 49 step down ring to try this out on my 31, but I have a feeling it will vignette and quite horribly at that.

Perhaps a better solution would be to use a 58mm filter and use step up rings for the other two in the trio.

i think step down ring would fit, as ive seen pictures here from people posting of putting alternative lens hoods that use a 55mm diameter, via using a 58mm -> 55mm step down ring.

hope someone can shed some light on using 49mm filters on the fa 31 (surely i'm not the only one who has thought of this?)

edit: to the above, i use the da15 the most with filters, and if i was to use a step up from 49mm -> 58mm, it would mean not being able to use the built in lens hood on the da15

Stop thinking about step down rings. The largest diameter defines what filters you should have - unless you want to buy duplicates. Check out the 35 mm DA lenses to match 49 mm diameter. The 31 pairs nicely with the 55 mm lens filterwise.

Using step-up/down rings in general is not a good idea. It usually means you can’t use the original lens hood and in the case of your FA31 cause vignetting. (Even more so if you were shooting with film)

For the amount of money you spent on the FA31, adding a few 58mm filters is not a waste of money and this is not a lens you want to risk degrading the optics.

I’ve had to bite the bullet and buy filters sets (b&w and colour film) for 49mm, 52mm, 58mm, 67mm and 77mm. Some sets are only for a couple lenses.

Phil.

Thanks for your input, of course buying the largest filter is the best idea, but in terms of the DA15 as you know the hood cannot be pulled out if the filter is any larger.

I just wanted to know whether anyone has tried a step down for the FA31 to 49mm, and on APS-C would there be any vignetting for sure.

I use a 49mm step down ring, this one to be exact Tiffen 58-49mm Step-Down Ring (Lens to Filter) 5849SDR B&H Photo

Works fine and I can't see any vignetting. It's permanently attached so I can pop on an ND or PL filter if I need to. I don't use UV filters or any other filter on my lenses.

i use the 58-49 stepdown on the 31 with a 49mm metal hood and have never noticed vignetting, likely because on a crop sensor, the actual edges of the image do not come into play.
i have a full set of filters for 49, 58 and 77 now and would love to simplfy, but it just gets complicated.

I'm curious -- how long is the hood?

about 22mm, which comes about 20mm beyond the stock hood when i use my C-PL and still no vignetting that i've noticed.
