I would say the Pentax-A 50mm 2.0. Great lens to practice on and won't break the bank.

I just received my F28 yesterday and I'm in love! Get a F28 (if you can find one), or a DA35 2.4 as a normal walk around lens. If portraits are your thing get a F50 1.7.

The 18-55 kit lens is quite a good little lens. I've never gotten a bad shot from it. If you're getting crappy photos from it, it's not the lens unless you just have a really bad copy. I don't have experience with the other Pentax "kit" lenses, but from what I hear, they're solid performers as well.

Here's one I took with the 18-55:

And a couple smaller examples:
Those are lovely-particularly that last one!

OP is lucky that it's limited to 3 pages (at this moment); imagine that each of the roughly 40000 members on this forum would have replied

I have the 18-55mm kit lens that came with my K-r and I haven't really gotten anything from it that I love just yet, however; I totally agree with what some people are saying about knowing how and when to use it. Pictures that Eddie and GibbytheMole posted here are proof of that. Beautiful images. So I know that as I learn more about how to capture nice images, the 18-55mm will find it's place.
In the mean time, I have been picking up lenses based on a specific application. And I have a fondness for finding used treasures, so I have started collecting the FA and F series lenses.
I got the FA 100-300mm f/4.7-5.6 for wildlife
The FA 100mm 2.8 macro for bees
The F 35-70mm f/3.5-4.5: just got this recently to play around with different lengths for portrait shots. I also realized I had nothing in that range yet.

I am frequently searching e-bay, the Pentax Marketplace, KEH and Adorama for the next lens that I will adopt and give a loving home to . But I usually wait until I have a desire to capture a specific type of image.

Oh, and the lens reviews here are particularly helpful.

It depends on what you like to shoot - all purposes or portrait, zoom or prime and your budget.

I only use prime lenses.
If you are on a tight budget, get DA 35 f2.4.
If you like to shoot f1.4 or f2- get a Sigma 30 f1.4 or Sigma 50 f1.4 for its performance wide opened and FF compatible.

I have FA 31 Ltd as my only lens for K5 (5000 shots so far with just one lens). I have placed an order for Sigma 50 f1.4 today. I am curious about how it renders comparing to my 50 Lux.

All the best with your selection!

Part of the joy of dSLRs over P&S cameras is the endless possibilities and creativity they offer. This forum is very friendly and open with lots of willingness to share and help. If the you think the OP should have gotten 1 endless repeating of the same answer then you're in the wrong place because one thing is for sure - Pentaxians are an independent breed.

Thanks very much. I know it's just a kit lens and not a limited prime or something, but honestly, I haven't found anything to dislike about the humble 18-55. It's a "go to" lens for me & I use it often.

I can tell you one thing for sure, it's put together MUCH better than the Canon or Nikon 18-55 kit lens. I played around with those in a store & they might take good photos, but they feel like a cheap toy. The focusing rings in particular, suck greatly.

DA 35mm f2.4 $170

I would recommend the 35mm before I would recommend a cheaper prime that doesn't have auto focus.

DAL 18-55 + DA 50-200 ( recently updated to DA 55-300 ) are all fine lenses.
Sigma DC 17-70 F2.8-4.5 ( the older type, no HSM, no OS, much lighter and better MACRO with incredible close focusing) perfect match for KX ( KR) ,perfect for indoors, both always together in my backpack with 4x spare Lithium AA's.
Sigma DC 18-125 HSM ( the newer one, much better optically version, but one without OS - which is rather rare ) usually attached to my K7 with a range of manual primes/zooms if needed.
I am just an amateur freezedtime images taker and any of those Sigma's would be very adequate kit lens first step upgrade.
some samples with 18-125:
Sigma 18-125mm F3.8-5.6 HSM PKA - a set on Flickr
there are virtually hundreds of samples taken with 17-70 but they are all over my flickr account, need to get organised.
But remember, it is you who is freezing time in your photos, the lenses are not taking them, I saw many great images captured by creative individuals with pretty crappy lenses.

Dont get me wrong, i have made good use of the 18-55 lens that came with my camera. I guess i shouldnt have said the kit lens was crappy. What i was really getting at is that i am investing in better lenses now because i think i am getting the hang of the camera and i want better quality lenses. I currently have the 18-55 DAL kit lens, and the FA 50mm f1.4 lens. I love the 50mm!! This week i bought the DA 18-135mm and just yesterday i bought the DA 16-45mm but i'm still waiting for them to arrive so i havent had a chance to play with them yet. I take a lot of photos for my business which is what got me wanting to upgrade my camera in the first place. My inital thinking was to replace the kit lens with the 16-45mm for my business and have the 18-135mm for when i go out walking around. I bought the 50mm exclusively for photographing my car which is my other hobby.

My original post was suggesting if you were just starting out in DSLRs and you could only have one lens in the bag, what would it be and why? What lens would give the best overall happy medium for everyday photography? The kit lens is getting much respect. Mine is the bottom level DAL and i am just not happy with the overall lens(quailty and construction). I guess i will hold onto it for now because it does take decent pics for what it is and it is pretty lightweight.

Here are some pics i've done with the kit lens.
