I'm not sure there is any correlation to cost (of ltd's) and ratings. The highest ratings lenses are the most expensive, the least expensive and several $500ish dollar lenses.

I have a DA40 and it's great at some things and avg at others. Paired with a A50/1.7 I have everything I need right now. but someday I'll have to decide whether I prefer a FA43 or FA50/1.4.

In my experience......

Over priced: FA77, DA21
About right: DA40, DA15, FA31
Bargain: FA50, DA70

Perhaps; I don't own the lens and won't dispute that statement. But I'll say this much: The DA 35 f/2.4 (I refuse to call it the DA-L) is good enough to put me in no hurry to replace it with the DA 35 Limited. I'm moving away from zooms in most situations and I am slowly collecting the DA Limiteds. I have, and love, the DA 21. It'll probably be the DA 70 next followed by the DA 15. The 35/2.4 has pleased me so much that the 35/40 Limiteds are way over the horizon for me. Personally, I think that makes the 35/2.4 the best bang for the buck among current Pentax primes. But that's just me.

I suspect this theory is often wrong. The factors contributing to how people rate lenses are much more varied and complex, and they are different for different people. If people think that a lens is priced too high, they sometimes express their annoyance with a lower rating. That appears to be the case with the DA* 55, which has the third lowest score among all of the DA primes. That lens is significantly more expensive than most other 50ish 1.4 lenses, so some rated it slightly lower as a result. Sometimes a high price can lead people to become more critical. Higher price leads to higher expectations; and when these expectations are not met, it leads to lower scores. Expensive lenses with high-than-average QC problems are in particular a target for downgraded ratings. This appears to be the reason why, for instance, that the DA 16-50 scores no higher than the DA 16-45. It also may explain the relatively low score of the FA 24-90, which is allegedly a pretty good lens (aside from QC and/or build quality issues). Another factor stems from the fact that people who buy expensive lenses tend to have more experience with higher quality glass, and are therefore more discriminating. The 18-55 II and the 18-55 WR are optically identical lenses. The WR version is more expensive, yet oddly enough, despite the greater cost, the WR version receives a lower score, probably because that lens is more often used and purchased by more experienced photographers who will judge the 18-55 by how well it performs in comparison with high end lenses, rather than just with a P&S.

For their price, the DA40 and DA70 are bargains. Of course, they are not fast lenses, which is part of what you pay for with the FA31 and FA77. The DA12-24 has better IQ than the DA15 and DA21, so I consider those overpriced.

I had a bad experience with an FA31. For the price, there should be no QC issues. I gave it the lowest score so far in the review section.

In my experience:

Over priced: FA31, DA21
About right: DA40, FA35,DA15(best DA LTD IMO), FA50(used to be a bargain)
Bargain: FA43, DA18-55 (kit lens), Samyang 85mm f1.4

Twitch, have you ever tried the DA35/2.4? If so, how would you rate it in that lineup? I know its not a limited. Another prime for me would either need to be shorter than 35 or longer than 50 and none of the <35's grab me but the DA70 seems like it might be a good one.

It's probably a dead horse by now, but that(IQ) is not my experience after literally thousands of photos with all 3 of those lenses.

My advice is dont pay attention to the "ratings" they are all over the place.
Pay attention to the pictures taken with said lenses.

A picture tells a thousand words

Might be better in some ways - certain qualities at certain apertures - but overall, considering all qualities and all apertures, the DA15 wins any objective comparison.

Never tried it, although it seems like good value I think 2.4 is too slow for a 35mm prime, which is also why I'll never buy a DA35 macro. I'd rather spend more and get a FA35 or Sigma 30/1.4.

DA 35/2.4 beats it for best-bang-for-the-buck IMO

I'm assuming your problem with its speed is DOF purposes because shutter speed isn't as much of a factor with the iso on the current DSLR's.

I hear you about the f issue but then by that reasoning many of the Limiteds are too slow for the price aren't they?
