400 mm lenses - Tokina or Sigma

Hello guys,

I was doing some research on 3rd party 400 mm prime lenses and found the Tokina 400 mm ATX and the three sigma variations: the 400 mm manual focus, the 400 mm AF APO and the 400 mm AF APO Macro. I read some reviews on the net about these lenses, but most were very incoherent, so I was wondering what were your opinions on these lenses. How would you rank them?

I only have experience with the Sigma APO manual focus and it is very good and easy to hand hold.

One thing I learned about the Sigmas though, is the lenses being kind of old have an issue where the internal focus group begins to get cement deterioration.

The outer lenses can look great but if you shine a light down the middle you will see white spots that look like fungus. This will result in loss of contrast.

It is not easy to get to and parts are not available.

You can still get good shots, but you will want to decide if it is worth what the seller is asking.

Wild parrot shot handheld with the 400mm, he is on an electrical wire about 75 ft up.

my Tokina was a purple fringer big time with my BIF photos. It was the AF AT-X version.

ok guys, does anyone of you have a Sigma 400 AF APO, the simple one, not the macro? What kind of iq does it have? I found that they are about 150-200$ cheaper than the macro version. Are they worth the trouble?

I also have the Tokina 400Af ATX. And yes, in high contrast scenes there can be a lot of purple fringing. If the contrast isn't too high, no problems with the fringing though. But at F8.0 it is a very sharp lens

Yes, I was just trying to indicate the characteristics of the lens natively (in my case at least) so when they use it they aren't surprised.
