The 16-45 Visits The Oldest Bar In Queens, New York

A friend of mine recently got a weekend job bartending at The Union Course bar, a.k.a. Neirs, so I fiigured I'd pay him a visit, and bring along my K100D, 16-45, and tripod.

Mae West sang here when she was young, and some of the bar scenes from the movie, "Goodfellas," were filmed here as well.

It's the oldest bar in Queens, and I believe the second oldest in New York City, with McSorley's Ale house being the oldest. (I could be wrong about this)

Being open since 1855 is something you don't see everyday. Here's a little history on the place: &nbsp -- Newsday.com

So now, you get a little bit of Queens history, and a lens test at the same time.

All shots were taken with the 16-45, sensitivity 400 with the camera on a tripod using only available light. Enjoy.
16mm @ f8.0 @ 1.5 seconds

45mm @ f5.6 @ .5 seconds

16mm @ f5.6 @ .7 seconds

16mm @ f13 @ 2 seconds

16mm @ f11 @ 2 seconds

16mm @ f8.0 @ 1 second

29mm @ f5.6 @ .7 seconds

23mm @ f5.6 @ .5 seconds

My goal was to have the photos come out as close to what the lighting looked like if you were actually in the bar. They did.

This place may look dingy to some, but I love the cozy atmoshere, and early 20th Century look of the place.

No, there aren't many places like this left anymore.

As for the Pentax 16-45, I am very happy with the results this lens gives, especially at 16mm.

I love this lens a bushel and a peck.

I dont know what a bushel and a peck is but your pictures show me that I left Queens too young to know what kind of city it really is.

A peck is a fraction of a bushel.

Looks pretty warm and cosy. Strangely the bottles in photo 2 reminds me of one of the DP review test images.

Nice shots!
Great athmosphere.

I did some Lightroom editing with one of your photos.
What do you think of it?

Love the shots of a very cool looking spot. The neat details I can see from these shots are the tin walls and ceilings, old well worn strip wood floor that I bet creaks and groans a bit, lots of wide gaps. The old hanging lights and plaques/pictures on the walls. Jukebox in the corner. Just tons of atmospere in the place.

In 154 years, I'm sure those walls could tell some stories! Very nicely captured!

Nice, Bert.

Brighter, and the colors are more pastelish.

I have very little experience with photoshop/Lightroom type stuff.

I'll have to start experimenting with them.

And thanks to everyone else for your comments. This is a cool place.

There's been talk for a while that this bar may close.

That's another reason I wanted to take some shots of the place now.

People just don't go to neighborhood bars anymore.

It would be a shame if this place goes under, but what can you do?

And now, I'll post some still life shots I just took in the interest of saving bandwidth, and not starting a new thread.

Here are a couple of shots with a prayer for Peace on Earth theme to them. Lord knows we need it.

Here's one without the angel.

And here's Mr. & Mrs. McFlake wishing everyone a Merry Christmas.

Go ahead; print them out for your kids.

Still life is not my favorite category, but I did these very quickly this morning for the Holidays.

Enjoy.

Merry Christmas to all.

A bushel and a peck are both dry measurements. A bushel is 32 quarts and a peck is a quarter, 8 quarts, of a bushel.
