Poll: 300mm AF Prime Lens

I would love some advice here on the best 300mm prime lenses with auto focus so I've posted a poll. I've listed the three I know of, but also have added an "other" choice for other 300mm primes I am unaware of. The 2.8 300mm primes are, sadly, outside of my price range and older manual-only mode lenses are outside of my expertise . The application is for wildlife and sporthorse (hunters and jumpers in outdoor events)

Oh, forgot to mention, if you do select "other" please feel free (if you'd like) to post a comment and identify the other lens that you favor. Thank you!!!

I have the f*300mm and won't let go of it. If the DA*300mm were as compact I'd consider changing for the faster af and 1/2 stop. Any of these three will give you excellent images. I know you are interested in a prime, but the Sigma 100-300mm f4 ex dg is very close in IQ and af speed. It would be on my list if i were looking for a 300mm lens.

I have the DA* 300/4 and am very happy with it.
I agree with ivoire, all 3 will give you excellent images. The DA*, as it is still in production, might be easier to find...

If SDM wasn't slow I'd say get what's new and readily available (the DA*), but because it is, go for the F* because it has a tripod mount.

The three Pentax 300mm (DA*, FA*, F*) are all great lenses IMHO. Anyone will be happy with any of these three lenses, although there are a few difference between each one..

In my case, I went for the FA* (instead of the DA*) because of the smaller size and lesser weight of the FA*, together with the absence of SDM which makes it more robust IMHO when used in rough conditions. (The price difference was at the time not an issue.)

Food for thoughts...

When shopping a 300mm AF prime for myself, I considered/compared the same three Pentax * lens. Each of the three can deliever "the goods", so for me it was a choice based on other lens features.

I chose the F* 300mm for it's:

1. tripod mount [better camera/lens balance point & much less strain on camera body]
2. aperture ring [necessary for my film cameras ]
3. built in lens hood [have not lost it yet ]
4. SDM-lessness [bit once already ]
5. Full frame coverage [another film camera requirement]

+1.

I haven't tried any of the others, but the F* leaves nothing to desire IQ-wise and has those nice extras the others don't. The built-in hood is just "da thang"

I voted for other, but I shouldn't be allowed to post with all this festive spirit aboard.

It was only after I hit the vote button that I noticed the AF bit, cos I was gonna mention SMC Pentax-A* 300mm F4.

I picked the DA300 f4. I had the DA300 and the sigma 100-300mm f4 and the sigma is very good and more versatile , but not quite as sharp wide open, and not very good at MFD while the DA is really good up close. Great for Butterflies and such. The FA*300mm f2.8 I had was just not sharp and though it was probably just sample variation I would be careful buying old stuff.

Thanks very much everyone. The comments are very helpful. I love the polling tool!!
It sounds like the FA* is perhaps not quite as popular as the other two because it doesn't have the tripod mount. And that built-in lens hood on the F* is pretty slick. Several people have mentioned the FA 2.8 which I would love to have. But it's a little rich for my blood right now.
