Yes it indicates the area of focus and as it lights as that area comes into focus it is easy to forget that it only indicates the area of focus.

Do you know if it is possible to switch them off?

On the K20D, apparently yes. I check the manual index for AF POINT and (among other things) it says: "AF point is not displayed in the viewfinder when [Off] is selected for [15. Superimpose AF Area] in the [C Custom Setting] menu." See your K5 manual for something similar. Good luck!

That's pretty much where it is on the K5 - C:2:14
