SIGMA APO 170-500mm F5-6.3 DG for Pentax

I am asking if anyone has had direct experience using this lens. It sells for quite a bit less than the Sigma 50-500mm 'Bigma'. Just wondering if it is worth purchasing or should I wait and save up for the Bigma?

I have this in Nikon mount.

Its ok, but i have not used it enough to form a valid opinion.

Above is a link to a full moon shot with the 170-500 and D200.

I only have the Bigma. The Bigma rocks.

I can tell you what I have read about the 170-500. IQ is not as good as the 50-500mm. Photos are supposed to be noticably softer.

If you dont have the $$ for the bigma and/or you dont want to wait, consider the 135-400mm. I have this one too and it is a great lens. I know alot of others here on the fourm have the "Little Bigma" so maybe they can chime in on it as well.

I've had the 175-500 for over 2 years. Nice lens. May or may not be as sharp as the 50-500.
At 500 it sharpens nicely in PP. It's been salt sprayed and rained on and still works fine.

Pros- Easy to carry and hand hold.
Cons- Zoom creep, slight 'Fog' type flare when shooting toward the sun.

I keep hearing that it is very soft at the long end. I found a lot of pictures on Pbase that generally seem to say otherwise.

I guess I'll wait for a few more first-hand revelations.
