Just Scored Rare 8 Element Super Tak 50mm F1.4 (I think)

I just won an ebay auction for a Pentax Spotmatic SLR for $46.00. A nice bonus is the lens that is attached. It is a Super Takumar 50mm F1.4 lens with low serial number. SO, I believe in actuality that I scored one of the rare 8-element F1.4's . The picture was pretty blurry and I couldn't see the infared registration mark, but I'm 80% positive it is the 8-element.

Even if it isn't I still got a 50mm F1.4 and Spotmatic for $46.00!

If the serial # is below 154xxxx the chance is pretty good. Blue keeps a database of serial #s, my # of 1549846 is the highest he knows of.

If that is correct, it might not be the 8-element then. I can't see it clearly (very small photo and blurry), but it looks like it starts with a 22-----

Oh well, if it isn't it is still a Super Tak 50mm F1.4 with a Spotmatic for $46.00

I have a 22xxxx that is a 7-element. Expect it to be yellowed. If you want to deyellow it just put a piece of tinfoil over the front element and point the rear element towards the sun in a south facing window for a month or two.

Yeah, it probably is a 7-element then. If it is yellowed, I'll just use a UV lamp I have, should de-yellow it in a couple of hours.

Definitely not an 8 element if the serial starts with 22.

I've seen an 8 element that started with 157....

But, a Super Tak 50 for $47 it still pretty darn good!

Yeah, I'm still happy about it. Don't forget the Spotmatic too, I'm wanting to try my hand at shooting film, so I think I still did pretty good for both the 50 f1.4 and Spotmatic for $46

Good find!

A couple hours is VERY optimistic of you, though. In my experience (having done about 20 of these lenses), Super Taks take at least 2 weeks (and up to 4) under a UV lamp before they are fully de-yellowed. You'll see results in a day or two, but the process slows waaaaay down after that. SMCs take substantially less time for some reason, even when highly-yellowed.

Blue sent me a spreadsheet at one time. PM him and see if he still has it.
