Buying an 18-135, best place to buy from, any known sales, etc. ?

Hi all,

I'll be picking up a Pentax 18-135mm to replace my kit 18-55 for a general walkaround and travel lens, probably followed later in the year by a Tamron 28-75 then either a 70-200/2.8 or DA* 60-250.

On the 18-135, B&H, Adorama, and Amazon are all about on price parity, so am considering:
- are there any known or expected sales or discount codes I'm not aware of that would cover the 18-135?
- I don't like buying an extended warrantee, but am contemplating it with the seemingly lousy Pentax warrantee (want amusement? Go to pentaximaging.com then the web shop, type in warrantee - not found :-/ ) . Amazon seems to push squaretrade, and I think both B&H and and Adorama offer Mack. Is it worth it in this case?
- return hassles. I'm truly hoping to get a good copy, and have zero issues. Having said that, I don't want to have to send a new out of the box lens for servicing, versus returning for a replacement if such an event happens within 30 days or so. I know this isn't an issue with Amazon, what about B&H or Adorama?

They are about the same. You can and should read the return policy from wherever you buy.

I'm not sure about the return policy of other than Amazon where you have a performance issues vs. an easily demonstrable product defect. Most performance problems can't be easily demonstrated, even when they're readily evident to you. My 55-300 DA from Amazon had performance issues and I returned it without any problems for credit - no need for exchange.

Try "Warranty" instead.

Purchasing through B&H or Adorama (when you click through here) has the added benefit of supporting this forum.

Is there a face palm smiley here?

Actually, that still doesn't turn up anything other than Optios by typing in 'lens warranty.' I may well be missing something obvious, but the warranty/ee really belongs under each product's listing.

Bought the K5 from Adorama, and happy to buy the 18-135 from B&H or Adorama if someone can confirm on some of the points above. I seem to recall, perhaps incorrectly, at least one posting about a defective K5 needing to go direct to Pentax/hands off from the retailer, which is not something I'm OK with inside of a reasonable period of 30 days or so.

???

That's a very important point. Although I don't have experience with Pentax in this regard, with other manufacturers I've been in situations where the manufacturer felt product performance was "within specs", when in fact it was pretty horrible, and identical model products performed dramatically better. You don't want to get into that situation. You need to assume that only truly complete mechanical or electrical failures can be dealt with by the manufacturer (and maybe even then, not very effectively.)

+1

Use the links listed by Adam at:
https://www.pentaxforums.com/forums/pentax-beginners-corner-q/128050-where-bu...t-upgrade.html

I bought from Adorama and B&H before and I can recommend both as many Pentaxians do. Both stores are very well reputed and have solid, clear return policies.

Hope that the links will assist,

It is usually in the product manual. You can download those as well.

Just ordered from B&H via the PF links, hopefully that works/PF gets credit, and here's hoping for a good copy.
