Adaptall-2 Teleconverter with 19AH

I sold my nice Tamron Adaptall 19Ah (70-210 f 3.5) to a forum member and he is reporting that the Adaptall-2 1.4 teleconverter does not fit.

My hazy memory tells me that I mounted a 1.4 teleconverter (140F) to this lens a couple of years ago and that it worked OK, but was rather fiddly to mount.

The Adaptall-2 web site says that the teleconverters were optimized for the prime lenses, but also worked with most zooms.

Is there a forum member with this lens and teleconverter who can check to see if such a coupling works?

Mike

I don't have the 1.4X but I have the 2X (01F) and the 19AH and they fit together fine. The Adaptall-2.org site says both the 1.4X and 2X should fit on lenses with a stationary master group (rearmost lens elements), which the 19AH has. So I think it should fit...

Yes, I read that about the stationary lens elements too. I definitely remember mounting my 140 teleconverter on a number of Adaptall-2 lenses that I owned a year or two ago and am pretty sure that included the 19 AH. I wonder if the new owner of the lens might have a defective 140?

Thanks for checking the 2x. I am pretty sure if that fits, the 1.4x will as well.

Works on my 19AH, but it is indeed rather "fiddly" to mount...

Are you sure?

Fellow Pentaxian Pepe reports that the 140 teleconverter will not mount on the 19AH because of interference with the rear elements. This agrees with what the buyer of my lens reports.

Unless someone produces a photograph of the two successfully mated, I am inclined to believe that they do not play nicely together.

Maybe the sequence your buyer is following could be the problem. It should be TC to the lens, adapter to the TC with the lens at maximum aperture, then set the PK/A adapter to AE setting, prior to mounting to the body. I don't have the 1.4x but 01F has no problem mounting on any Adaptall, Adaptall-2 lenses I own.

Sequence is right, but the rear group of the 19AH is too long by about 5-6mm.

Wow, that's too bad - a 1.4x would have been the perfect companion to a 19AH, 294/4.9 a very useful focal length and still well within Pentax DSLR's AF confirmation aperture range.

Could one of you (seller/buyer) get this in as a comment in the lens/converter data base? It would be useful info to others. Sorry for the problems you got. It is an very good converter, but I'm lucky, it fits on my lenses.

Looking at the best adaptall info source on the web, adaptall-2.org, they write about the 1.4x converter that

"The 140F converter was designed to be used with Tamron's SP 90mm models 52B and 52BB, SP 300mm F/2.8, SP 400mm F/4, SP 200-500 F/5.6, and the SP 350mm F/5.6 and SP 500mm F/8 mirror lenses. Tamron's literature states that this converter is compatible with all Tamron fixed focal length lenses of 90mm and longer. This converter also performs well with all Tamron zoom lenses which have a stationary master group (the rearmost group of lens elements), and can also be used with many Tamron wide to tele zoom lenses for increasing maximum macro magnification by 1.4X."

So I suppose that this zoom has a non-stationary rear group. Unfortunately, adaptall.org comment on every individual lens if the 2x converter fits, but make no comments on the 1.4x.

Well the rear group is fixed on the 19AH, so for some reason the discription on the adaptall-2.org site is not correct (I did check there first before I purchased the 1.4x).

Adaptall teleconverter for 19AH

All

I have some promotions literature produced by Tamron at the time. The 19AH has only the 01F converter listed as acceptable ie the 2X. It is the 01F that appears to fit most of the adaptall line.

The 140 converter only features for the 200-500, 90, 300 and 500
