I don't own either at the moment, but when I did own them at the same time they served different purposes. The 60-250 covers a much bigger range and would be my default outdoor lens if size wasn't a big factor and the light was sufficient to shot at f/4. The 50-135 was more of a specialty lens (for me) for times when I wanted the extra speed and/or wanted a lighter lens. Did I really "need" both? No, they did overlap quite a bit and I certainly never took them both out at the same time.
As you point out, the 50-135 + a prime (200/300) probably makes more sense if you're going to own a pair of DA* lenses in terms of maximizing your speed (200) or coverage (300). But if you want the access to the full zoom range in a single lens, the 60-250 is the only way to get it (and optically it's not much of a compromise, even compared to the other DA* lenses).
