I bought my first DSLR in 2011, the K5.
18-55 WR
SMC-A 50/1.7
SMC-A 70-210/4.0
Tamron/Quantaray 70-300
Tokina 28-70/2.8-4.3
I literally (Dec 31st, 2011) just bought the DA 18-135 to replace the kit lens. The kit lens 18-55 will either be sold off, or kept if it looks like we may be picking up a second body, TBD right now.
I'll be buying the Tamron 28-75/2.8 as the next lens, unless someone manages to put out a moderately priced 17-70 2.8.
From there, "things get complicated"/unknown. Mostly flip-flopping between the DA* 60-250/4.0 or a Tamron or Sigma 70-200/2.8, with a possible "detour" into a used 55-300 along the way, and possibly a few primes in K or KA mount - 28/35/55/100, and maybe an FA50.
Sorry for kind of intervention. I invested a lot in my own understanding and personal feel of K-mount available long tele photo solutions. The DA 55-300 is a decent lens. Once I even shot a Roger Waters (Pink Floyd) 'The Wall' concert with it. But, boy, how many times, looking at my soft, over sharpened images, I wished to have something better at the time...
When you are buying into just decent solution you may limit yourself and spoil the life time opportunity kind of shot in the future. With DAL 55-300 I lost a few such shots. They are gone forever...
If you are not ready for a long prime, there is a DA*60-250/4. Both others 70-200 are great lenses, as I heard, but eventually you would miss an extra reach. Unfortunately, there is no SDM capable TC available yet. However, with 2-3 attempts to lock focus you can do it with the 1.4X Tamron or 1.5X Kenko TC. It's not for BIF, but pretty decent for a Big Egret, getting a fish. I don't use DA*60-250 with a TC personally. But there is definitely an opportunity to do so.
There is a sample shot and crop, taken from approx. 15-20ft distance with DA*60-250+Tamron 1.4X Pz-AF TC at 350mm total focal length. Judge for yourself.
