i'm going overseas in a few months on a trip around the mediterranean and after a 'healthy discussion' with wolfie boy yesterday he's thrown a spanner in the works ("we are not taking your lens collection with us" *grumbles*), which means i am now eyeing either an 18-250 tammy or some derivative of (the important thing is that it needs to start 18 and ends past 50). i checked out the 18-135 WR that everyone's been raving about but that price bracket is SO not going to happen. Unfortunately wolfie boy doesn't agree with me re the lens acquisition: "the answer isn't to buy another lens" he says.. (we only talked about it in my vain hope that i could get the cash out from the joint account)

either way both the 18-250 and the 17-70 lenses are out of my budget ($50 or less) so it means i'm going to have to up it, depending on how bad teh LBA gets.
my europe kit is DA14 M28 3.5 m50 1.7 m100 f2.8
compact easy to carry in a small bag all good iq and you have equivalents to most. i usually throw in the 18-50 wr for lousy weather but rarely use it
you will need something uwa more than reach at the long end

And of course whatever weird falls in front of me. But how about YOU all? Upon what lens(es) do y'all think you'll want to spend money? I'm not asking about how much you will budget, just a general road map. Are you going for superzooms, fisheyes, Limiteds, a pile of cheap MF primes, something labeled Leitz that costs over US$10k, or what?
I think I might try to buy back the FA28/2.8 that I foolishly sold a year or two ago. The little bit of extra width compared with the DA35 does actually make xuite a difference. And while usual manual focus on the M28/3.5 is great for landscapes or buildings, it just don't work for general walkaround ...

(Guess what? the character to the left of the w on my keyboard has stopped working! All my spelling will be xuite xuaint from now on ...)

thanks for the recs eddie i have three of those lenses, well four if we ignore the 100 2.8 and pretend it's the same as the 100 4.0

although not sure what speed my 28 is either. anyway, i imagine the DA 14 is gonna set me back quite a bit eh? not sure i usually go that wide though.

So if you get one of these we'll never know, I guess.

The Pentax X system .... appealing, but I can't afford it ...

Probably nothing. Santa brought me a 16mm MC zenitar M42 lens to fill out the bottom end of my M42 kit Unless I find a K200/2.5 really cheap, I can't see anything else I could really use. In M42 I have 16, 24, 28, 35, 50, 55, 58, 85, 105, 135, 200. In k mount MF I have 8, 14, 24, 28, 35, 50, 85, 105, 135, 300 , 400. plus 70-210/3.5 and 200-500/5.6 In AF I have 10-20,18-35', 18-55, 28-75/2.8, 70-200/2.8 and various TCs. Add *istD, K10D, K7D, and K5D and flashes and the is not much left

Now I can't find the original post, it was about a cheaper alternative to something like the DA 18-135WR, what about something like this?
Pentax-F 35-105mm F4-5.6 Reviews - F Zoom Lenses - Pentax Lens Reviews & Lens Database

Average price of around $70 or so, check ebay, keh, etc.

IIRC, there's also a 20-something or 30-something to 135 legacy Pentax or Tamron, check some of these:
Pentax F Zoom Lense Lens Reviews and Specifications - Pentax Lens Reviews & Lens Database
Pentax FA Zoom Lense Lens Reviews and Specifications - Pentax Lens Reviews & Lens Database
Tokina Lenses for Pentax: Zoom Lenses - Pentax Lens Review Database

FA 28-70 f/4.0, some of the f ~28-105s, Tamron/tokinas all within < $100 in the same general range, some with decent ratings..

I recently got a K5 so I suspect the first purchase will be a KatzEye screen to help with all my manual focus lenses.

A battery grip for the K5 is next in line as I find the K5 to be a tad small.

As funds permit the DA* 300/4 or possibly a DA* 200/2.8 are next in line.

Maybe I can help by taking the 200/2.5 off your hands

Thanks rtpguy! I'll go and check them out. I kinda wanted to have the 18mm range (was going through wega with my last batch of holiday photos), but I'm curently testing out my F 35-70 in the vain hope that maybe I can live with 35 or even 28 rather than 18. If that's the case, then maybe I can spend under $100 and get what I want/need.

I just picked up a Tokina ATX 28-85 Macro and Pentax-M 135 3.5 from ebay a few days before the year ended, still waiting for the postman to knock on my door.

For 2012, I'm targeting one Ltd, can't decide between DA 21 or the DA 35 Macro, thinking of buying it new.

If I get the DA 21 Ltd, I'll probably add the DA 35 2.4 as a cheap alternative to cover different FL.

As for used lens, it will depends on what comes up on ebay..

my wife gave it to me today as a late Christmas present and just made it a New Year gift instead. actually she was considering buying me the Sigma 85 but thought that I might like this on the NX200 which I was using more regularly nowadays.
