Originally posted by eddie1960 there are cheaper alternatives. the samyang.bower/vivitar is apparently very good. manual focus which shouldn't be an issue for you, and about half the price of a DA 14 or 15 LTD. I have the 14 because when I went digital it was really the only option to replace a 21 on ff. cost me $750 back then but I've used it fairly extensively. If I'm traveling with a Pentax kit it's always in the bag. I can't say that about any other lens I own. EDIT as for going that wide, while you may not need to in Australia (or for that matter Canada) when you get to european cities it's very useful. stepping back a few feet isn't always an option
yeah, i'm starting to think maybe i should get an all purpose manual zoom. i took my f 35-70 out for a spin last night (in an attempt to see if 35 really will do me) and i tried to take pics of the puppy in gorgeous sunset pink light. every photo turned out blurred. landscapes were great, but puppy pics? nada. i've never had that problem with low light manual lenses - although when i think about it, what actually happens is that either cif refuses to work.
hrmmm... i did start to think maybe i should've gotten out a fast fifty, but that meant running back into the house. which kinda defeats the purpose of taking a spontaneous pic
good point about needing to go wide for european cities. it probably explains why so many of my last european trip were taken at 18mm. I was surprised that i had that many at that length - never thought i was that much of a wide angle kinda gal.
congrats on your new purchase monochrome. i'm sure you'll love it and give it plenty of love and attention.... until the next lens comes along
*looks sideways at my 'neglected lens pile"
i wish i could stay true to the 'no more lens buying' mantra.
