I always thought that stuff was called "duck tape".
Don't worry, I'm sure you weren't alone there. In fact, there is a popular brand of duct tape here in the US actually called "Duck Tape" and it features a duck logo.

The number of times I hear it mentioned (usually on TV or in films) it must be pretty handy stuff. However, I've never had occasion to use it in all my life. I guess I've missed out on a whole heap of fun.

Every photographer should have at least one roll of this magic duck/duct stuff in their bag.

It's given temporary life to many pieces of failed kit in the field, as well as being an extra pair of hands when needed.

Even good for holding miscellaneous articles of clothing together, again extra hands, without getting your face slapped.

Do they have it in the UK? If not, let me know and I will send you a roll. Everybody should have a roll in thier bag for emergencies.

Duct tape is the name of the item.
Duck Tape is the registered trade mark of one of the manufacturers who uses it for his duct tape and some related things.

Strange enough, such tape is in most countries known only under the name of the most common brand. In the US this may be Duck, in other countries Scotch.
In my country nearly no one knows either, every such tape is called Tesa. But the tape you all are speaking about has no special name, it's just "Gewebe-Klebeband", which translates as Textile Based Adhesive Tape.

Thank you Alkazalsir, that's very kind of you. I reckon we must have it in Blighty, but I'm not a very practical sort of chap. I will take the advice of yourself and the other experienced members of this forum, and seek out a roll of the magical stuff forthwith!

Someone say Scotch...

In UK, Scotch tape is a 3M product, like a translucent sellotape for stationary, which almost disappears by magic when paper is stuck with it.

But he's one for you, I believe there's a brand of sellotape in Australia called Durex, where as in lots of parts of the world, this is well... how shall we say, a known brand of condom.
