is the 28-80mm power zoom compatible with DSLRs

Pentax-FA 28-80mm F3.5-4.7 Reviews - FA Zoom Lenses - Pentax Lens Reviews & Lens Database
Is the 28-80mm Powerzoom compatible with DSLRs, in that can you change the focal length? It appears that the zoom doesn't work on my K-x, or my film era zx-30. The zoom focal length is stuck at 50mm.

Apparently not. Check this thread out. Oh, it will work on the K5.

It's a nice lens, I have one and I like it a lot on my K5 and K20d. Really though the fun PZ functions (focus tracking, star zoom, and one other one) wont work on any DSLR only film bodies, but the remember last zoom and power zoom will function on the indicated DSLR bodies in the thread.

I don't understand why you can't change the focal length. The lens has a manual zoom mode (move the zoom ring towards the camera) that should work regardless.

I've been using the FA 28-80mm lense on the Pentax K2000. It's a similar lense, not quite the same one but I did run into one issue:

On occasion, the zoom does tend to lock up. That is, sometimes it gets stuck in the range from 80-50mm. There is apparently an incompatibility with the zoom mechanism on this lense and the AF of newer DSLR's such as the K2000. The issue is intermitted and does not always happen. The only solution I have found is to uncupple the lense from the DSLR body and manually twist the zoom back and forth from 80mm to 28mm, and back again a few times. This gets the zoom un-stuck.

I don't think the FA-J version of the 28-80mm zoom would share this flaw, because it was mechanically optimized for early DSLR's such as K-*ist even though I'm told it's optically identical. For that reason I'm going to buy an FA-J fairly soon. You might consider the same.
