One more thing

the lens is much more sensitive to ambient light at 250mm f4. Contrasting lighting would make the picture softer. BUT the softness is very different from that of my DA55-300 and my other long relatively chepo long zooms. The softness is actually pleasant.

wlachan hit it on the spot I think - I've seen a lot of 60-250 shots (had to compare when deciding to get that or the Tamron 70-200) and it is no slouch at any focal length or aperture. What your shots are showing is not typical to the lens.

For example:

That is from the lens review section testing the 250mm at F4. It has none of the "softness" your shots show (and is damn sharp to me).

Not the same

The softness does not seem to be the same as that shown on your photos. Thanks.

I think your lens has a defect, it looks familiar with the issue im having with my F*300:

Your 250mm at f4 looks sharper

I have to say that I do not see the same levels of aberration (softness) on your photos.

I think that the softness on mine might be too much.

Thanks much for the link.

Well it does need a little stop down at 250mm to get real sharp, but it is still good at 250m and f4.

Did a test with it when I bought mine:

Hi DA*60-250mm owners, I bite the bullets and got the lens a couple of weeks ago. The image at 250mm f4 seems a bit soft. While softness is fine, I do NOT want to have a defect. See attached photos which are cropped at about 1:1. Is it too soft?

The whole photo.

I use Kx.

Thanks much!!!!

Look at the background of the last image and you'll see there are two of each of the smaller image elements along the line where the concrete meets the vegetation. It's quite obvious that camera shake is the issue in these pictures from this.

Check for FF/BF first. I don't use it with K-x. But mine required substantial AF micro adjustment on K-5 due to BF issue.
There is a kind of "sharpness" test (I was testing it along with the Sigma 100-300/4, FA*300/4.5 and bunch of 1.4X TCs) wide open.

To me it's very sharp even with 1.4X TC attached

yes. I have to dial in to adjust for BF. I have requested RMA. Here is the last photo that I would like to share.

Again. 250mm at f4. Focused on the big red stones.

1:1 crop (100% crop?)

I took this picture this afternoon with my K7 and 60-250 @ 250 F4 ISO 800 and 1/250. The image is untouched by human hands (no pp).

There's something wrong with that lens. That amount of blur is unacceptable for any lens, much less a DA*.

With all due respect it is not a good sample of what DA*60-250/4 can deliver. I usually shoot DA*60-250/4 at f/5.6, but Itís decently sharp even wide open. The image below and 100% crop are also not the best, but that is the only image I found with no PP applied. Shot at 250mm and f/5.6.

100% crop

In addition please follow the link below (I posted it above already). There is a test shot and decent crop of the $20 bill. I think it is sharp enough despite the fact that it was shot with DA*60-250/4 wide open and Tamron 1.4X Pz-AF TC at 250x1.4=350mm. https://www.pentaxforums.com/forums/pentax-slr-lens-discussion/170174-lens-bu...ml#post1763237

Got my replacement, much better

Thanks for all the comments and suggestions!

Fortunately, I did not follow the comments that suggested either handshakes or mis-focusing as the reason for the softness. Got my replacement. Much better at 250mm at f4.

One random shot without using a tripod and 100% crop. Did not focus very well.

One indoor low light shot without tripod and 100% crop. They are all under extreme lighting conditions.

More test is needed. But feel much better now.

Too bad that you had to send your first one back. However, the pictures from the replacement looks good. It should really produce some of the sharpest pictures you have ever seen from a zoom.
