Sigma 400 F5.6 APO

Anybody know anything about this lens? Did a search but couldn't find anything.

I have the 300/4 APO MF. It's a very good lens.
I think the 400 is also good. Never heard anything bad.
If it's AF the usual dislaimer applies ("Sigma lenses often have AF problems").

Hi Salty,
There apparently were 3 versions made of this lens. A MF non macro (K mount), a MF Macro(KA Mount) and an AF macro (KAF mount).

According to the SPLOSdb, the AF and the MF macro are very good lenses, the MF non-macro, is one to stay away from.

Thanks Alan, I can't tell, but it looks like the Sigma I was looking at is the non-macro MF, I guess I'll pass on it then. More and more it looks like I'll have to wait for the DA* 60-250.

There were several versions and the non-macro were not rated very highly. heres a couple of sites that have rated the sigma 400's:

you, know, if you are looking for a 400mm, I had an A400 f5.6 for a while. Built like a tank, and heavy as one, but it had really nice IQ. You can find nice examples for around $500 give or take.

I have the Sigma 400mm f/5.6 MF non-APO version and it isn't so bad. Bad copy perhaps.

The AF Sigma 400 that you want is the APO Macro with the 77 mm filter thread and tripod collar. The Pentax version does not have HSM.

The hood is built-in on this version. The AF/MF control is a single turn on a separate ring closest to the camera body and just before the focus ring. It is quite easy to use to flip back and forth between AF and MF

Some reviews can be found at FM Reviews - 400mm f5.6 APO Tele Macro HSM

I also had the non-macro MF Sigma 400mm 5.6 APO briefly, and would agree with the above negative comments. Really not a lens I could recommend.
