Comparing the DAL 18-55 with F 35-105

Finally had a chance to take some test pictures. I am trying to decide which lens I should make my walk-around lens. I took all of the pictures at 35mm but changed the aperture for different pictures. All pictures were also taken using a tripod. For the 18-55, I tried to get it as close to 35mm as possible.

DAL 18-55 are on the left; F 35-105 are on the right.

18-55 (4.5); 35-105 (4.0)

18-55 (5.6); 35-105 (5.6)

18-55 (8.0); 35-105 (8.0)

Any recommendations as to which I should keep as the walk-around?

I also took pics at approx 40mm and approx 50mm. If anyone is interested, I can post those up later.

Can you either link us full resolution shots of these pictures, or crop out the center and any corner (500x500 pixels) and post those instead? Websized, I can't tell any differences.

Besides the 18-55 being a bit underexposed.

I put the photos together (poster style). I figured that would make it easier to compare. Hopefully, I'm right. Thanks.

Just realized flickr automatically resized my image. Let me see if I can figure something else out...

It's interesting: this shows the usual "warm" color cast the older lenses seem to have. I see this with M, A and FA lenses on my K-x as well. I never quite liked the colors you get from the DA, they seem shifted towards purple, and they blow out reds.

From the samples, the F seems to have exposed more "correctly", and at that resolution sharpness appears to be ok. I would keep the F just for the more natural, film-like tones, I really enjoy it.

Anyone know of a free image hosting site that allows you to link to original size images?

I also felt that the F series lens exposed more accurately. I hadn't really noticed any underexposure on the 18-55 before. I'm going to have to go back and look at other images to see if this is consistent.

I think the sharpness on the DAL is a lot better, but the colors feel better on the F lens.

I have some F lenses (35-80 and 80-200) that, while giving very natural tones, are really soft, but I can't base any assumptions on those since they are pretty beat up and the 80-200 has a foggy element inside. OTH, I have a cheap FA 100-300 that is a real gem, very sharp and natural tones like the F. Looking at the forum database it seems most F series is crap regarding sharpness.

I find my F & FA lenses also make green 'greener' than my DA lenses (18-55 & 50-200)

I have the Pentax-F-35-70mm-F3.5-4.5 and it's one I keep avoiding selling...

From the crops, the DA 18-55 is better than the 35-105 in sharpness both wide open and stopped down, especially the corner

The focal lengths are very different and for me that would determine which I would use as a single-lens, i.e., walk-around choice.

After looking at the results and everyone's comments. I think I'll probably use the 35-105 more frequently than the 18-55.

I like the fact that it gives me almost twice the range (on the long end, at least). I'll use the 18-55 when I know I need something sharper, or I'm in a tight space. The macro option on the 35-105 is also nice to have.

I wonder if there are any tips to increase the sharpness on the 35-105. I don't have a lens hood for it. I guess I could get one. Does anyone know what type of lens hood is recommended for this lens? I've seen that both the flower and non-flower (not sure what the term for it is) exist in the 58mm format.
