Here is your winner:

SMC Pentax-FA* 250-600mm F5.6 ED [IF]
Pentax-FA* 250-600mm F5.6 ED [IF] Reviews - FA Zoom Lenses - Pentax Lens Reviews & Lens Database

10.0 according to user reviews.

Well, enough joking, if you are new to Pentax and/or DSLR start with a fairly standard zoom (Pentax 18-55 or 18-135, and/or Sigma or Tamron alikes). When you get used to the gear and when you reach the limits you can easily expand it in any direction you want (prime, macro, tele, wide-angle, fast glas etc).

People are going to struggle to answer this is theyhave no idea on the focal length you're after?

If you're looking for good IQ (image quality) then you probably want a SELECTION OF PRIME(fixed focal length) LENSES...

Look in the lens reviews section of the site... I guess if money is no object (lucky fu**er) you should be lookin at the FA-Ltds and DA-Ltds as well as some of the DA* (*)'s...

I have the two you mentioned... They're both very good but neither is considered 'Best'... 'Best for the price' maybe so...

I believe the fa* 200 f4 macro is a good candidate.

Most people who have used them claim the FA31 and FA77 are the best. Others will tell you the DA Limited lenses are better and more compact. Some will say the best lens is the one that lets you take any picture in any situation, and will recommend a superzoom. Others will tell you a high-quality, short zoom is better. For bug shots a true macro is the mandatory choice. So there is no answer to your question.

Sharpest ever? FA50 f2,8 macro. Fastest to focus? Most of the DA lenses, and the F50 f1,7. Best bokeh? DA*55 f1,4. And I'm only listing Pentax lenses...

Sharpness and focus can be tested but bokeh not since its a matter of taste.

If you're just starting the K5 with the DA 18-135 & DA35 f/2.4 would be the best modern combo, you can hace a taste of everything this way without much money,
If you want more quality the DA*16-50 + DA*50-135 is a nice set or the Limited lenses.

But we are now talking about image quality not photo quality, the later is all your doing so if you want to improve that you need to improve yourself.

Also the F50/2.8 macro, I believe optically it's the same as the FA version, only some minor cosmetic differences. I have one and it's incredibly SHARP. One drawback of the F version is the very narrow focusing ring, which I believe was fixed in the FA version.

Best lens for what kind of photography? Rather difficult to determine which lens is best among different focal lengths or between faster or slower lenses. The DA* 55 is sharper and faster than the DA* 300, but it would be kind of silly to say the DA* 55 is therefore the better lens. It's the better lens if you are trying to take a portrait, but if you are trying to photograph that Bull Elk with blood on his antlers, the DA* 300 is better.

And the DFA version, which added the QSF as well. I love my DFA50.

Without knowing a specific focal length I'm inclined to agree... Either that or the OP has money to burn and hasn't got a clue... In which case he should sell his K5 and buy a top-end Leica...
