Pentax 50mm 1.7 shaking

Hi.

Just got a 5mm 1.7 second hand and it is very nice to have 1/60s shutterspeed indoors.

The problem is when I shake the lens (when off-camera) I can hear it rattling; like something is loose inside. Is that something to worry about?

Regards

Sometimes the aperture lever or mechanism can be loose inside.
Did you try pushing and holding the lever(to add tension) to see if that changes anything?

I have tensioned the lever and shake but it still sounds like that. :/

Do your 50mm rattle?

I have to check when I get home, but I do believe my M50 1.7 rattles. I also searched on this forum before when that happened, and I believe it's a common thing. As long as it's rattling off camera though - on camera, would be a little weird.

Okay I checked two of my own copies(both A/1.7) and they are rock solid(no noises). Though one of the aperture rings makes a slight noise when I shake it, however if I put my finger on it, its quiet. Other than that, everything is nice and tight on both.

BTW. what version of 50/1.7 do you have? A or M?

My copy of the Pentax M 50/1.7 makes a high pitched sound when I shake it. It's worked pristinely up to this point, so I don't mess with it - I assume it's something in the aperture, but the aperture is nice and tight and responsive.

If you remove the mount flange(held by three small screws) you will might find the culprit. There's a spring and mechanism in their and I think they can get worn and loose over time.

Then again.. I agree with what you said too.
If it works, then it likely isn't a serious issue.
Enjoy your 50/1.7 btw. That is one heck of a sharp lens.

Mine (M50) doesnt have high pitch sound. Just like something is loose inside.

Ive tried unscrew it but Pentax has screwed it so damn hard. Its unable to turn. :/

When I turn the aperture it clicks good but the click between f/2 (I suppose (no mark)) and f/1.7 seem a little harder and not as snappy as the other apertures.

It takes photos good so I dont think I'll worry too much about it. Btw I have a Pentax A 50mm 1.7 on the way from UK. Hope the A-setting is useful.

My A 50 1.7 does, always has, since 1985 or so. It has stayed most of its life in the "A" setting.

Mine had the same issue and I used a pencil with an eraser to tighten the ring where "ASAHI OPT. ...." is printed. Worked like a charm. May want to give it a shot.

I just got mine (50 M 1.7), it's like new, and it does the same high pitch rattling when I shake it, maybe it is common thing. With it I got 35 3.5 k, and it does the same thing, just little lower in pitch.

My M 50/1.7 has always (since new in 1982) rattled a little when off camera. My A 50/1.7 does not rattle, despite having inferior build compared to the M. I did a quick survey of my lenses and most rattled a little. One was particularly silent...my Russian Jupiter-9. That is not surprising since it has a preset aperture mechanism and much less to rattle.
