I'm looking for a new Pentax lens-need advice.

I have the K5 and my workhorse lens is the Pentax 18-250mm. It does a good job but the IQ in the 18mm range when it comes to people and features is just so-so to me.My other lenses are the Pentax 100mm WR--Pentax 55-300--Takumar 135 3.5. I'm thinking of getting the Pentax SMCP-DA 12mm - 24mm f/4 lens to add to my stable-- Any feedback will be greatly appreciated.----charliezap

12-24 for people shots? Tough to do but not for people with talent:

Check out the 12-24 f4 for people shots by Benjamin Kanarek a professional photographer. [Once you hit the link, scroll down in the posts to see some of his photos with that lens].

DA*16-50 is my pick. The difficulty is getting a good copy.

I use the 18-250 for people at times and when I crop a bit the IQ at the low end is ok.I'm not going to use the Pentax SMCP-DA 12mm - 24mm f/4 solely for people but I want it there if needed as an alternative to the 18-250 when the situation calls for it.Most of the time I'll be using it for scenics and I just want to know if it will be a good choice.--charliezap

I have a DA18-250mm and it is my workhorse. In my case, however, I decided to complement it with the DA10-17 mm Fisheye. My approach was to add some wide angle range with a lens which is both a Fisheye (at 10 mm) and a wide angle (at 14-17 mm). I am very happy with the outcome.

Food for thought...

My original K20D kit contained the DA10-17 (the lens that drove me to Pentax), DA18-250 (my basic lens; all others are specialists), and FA50/1.4 (my gotta-get-the-shot lens). Add the Tamron 10-24 (for tight spaces and close 'scapes) and there's my minimalist kit, out of the 220+ lenses I have now. I'll agree that focal lengths below 25mm aren't really for shooting individuals (with talented and/or situational exceptions). My people-shooting zoom is the F35-70, with the Tamron 10-24 (towards the long end) for groups. Many prefer the Tamron 17-50/2.8 and/or 28-75/2.8, or the Sigma 17-70/2.8-4. Those and the DA16-45/4 or DA*16-50/2.8 or DA17-70/4 are about it for good options. Good luck!

12-24 is a great range with excellent IQ.
