What Im looking for is a reliable comparison

I have been researching the Pentax SMC DA* 300mm f/4 ED [IF] SDM as a possible wildlife lens to use with a K-5. There are only a limited number of reviews of the lens from reputable sources and even fewer with MTF data.

What Im looking for is a reliable comparison of image quality between the DA* 300mm and its Canikon 300/4 peers. I have searched and searched. You can find no end of Canikon comparisons, but nothing Pentax wise. Your help and experiences are greatly appreciated

There are some solid independent reviews at:

Pentax SMC DA* 300mm f/4 ED [IF] SDM - Review / Test Report "The Pentax SMC DA* 300mm f/4 ED [IF] SDM is highly desirable lens for sports and wildlife photographers. The performance is generally impressive"
Pentax DA* 300mm f/4 Lens Review "While it may not be the near-perfect tool that the DA* 200mm proved to be, the 300mm variant largely lives up to the hype "
Lens Review: Pentax DA* 300mm F4 SDM | photographybanzai.com
http://www.popphoto.com/gear/2008/12/lens-test-pentax-300mm-f4-smcp-da-ed-if-sdm-af "this very versatile tele will score high marks among nature and sports shooters"

While the DA*300mm is mentioned briefly in this review:
Sigma Lens: Primes - Sigma 300mm f/2.8 EX DG HSM APO (Tested) - SLRgear.com!

In my case, I went for the FA*300 f4.5 because I wanted a smaller and lighter lens, and I did not want SDM. (I bought my FA*300mm used from a PF member.)

Hope that the above may help.

I think everyone makes decent teles these day and the practical differences come down to AF performance and reliability. If you are starting from scratch, just go Canon which will be far more versatile for wildlife down the road.
