Pentax 600mm f4

I've been browsing Ebay, and have found a listing for this lens. I've found some info on the web, but most of it about a white lens. This one is black, I'm guessing an older model. Can anybody tell me more?

PS Am I allowed to post the link?

Yes you can post a link. I did check though and the only 600mm I see on ebay is an SMC 600mm f/4 in 6x7 mount. Post the link and you will get more help.

I have considered this as an option for longer focal lengths but never made myself pull the trigger. I read where another forum member here said that it had color registration issues on digital bodies, not sure exactly what that means? There is another member who won an ebay auction for one of these for $1,000.00 and he has not used it much from what I can tell but has posted some photos that make it look like it could work alright. So, the choice is yours.

Well, I posted out of curiosity, I' m not planning to buy anything. It' s going to be a couple of months before I even get a camera. It' s just that it seems an "exotic".

Giklab,
Pentax makes (or made) lenses for several different mounts. The current mount is called k-mount and was developed originally for 35mm film cameras. It is used today with some modification and is one of the attractions of Pentax since they have been using it so long.

The lens you referred to on ebay is in 6x7 mount, intended for a medium format film camera. It can be used on a modern camera with adapters but it will be fully manual. You might also see lenses marked 645 which is another medium format mount. Pentax currently makes the 645d which can use these lenses. They can be used on dslrs like the k-r or k-5 with an adapter.

Pentax also made many lenses in M42 mount which can be used on dslrs with an adapter. These used to be quite cheap until adapters for other brands came out. Since then the prices have sky-rocketed.

If you knew all this, my apologizes, but since you implied you were new to Pentax I wanted to point out that not all Pentax lenses will work on newer cameras without adapters and limitations that you should be aware of before purchasing.

Thanks, I forgot about the MF mount. Still used to Nikon, with the same-mount-for-every-camera-ever-made. I do have an M42 Jena Pancolar I'd like to use, can you recommend a certain adapter?

There is some debate on the best adapter. The official Pentax one always works and is well made. Most of the ebay clones work as well and are cheaper. But some of the clones are poorly made. Also, some have a flange that prevents focusing to infinity.

If you only want one, get the official one and never worry. If you are going to get a bunch, one for each lens, then I would look at the clones but test the brand first.

While that may be true for Nikon's respective camera formats, I don't think it is possible for each format meaning large format, medium format, 35mm and so on to share the same mount.
Jatrax is just indicating that the 600mm f4 lens mentioned originally is for the medium format 6X7 pentax camera line not the 35mm K-mount camera line so that lens would need an adapter to be used on a 35mm/APS-C camera body. Which pentax made an adapter for and can be found on the used market or by third party manufacturers new.

https://www.pentaxforums.com/lensreviews/Pentax-67-Adapter-for-K.html

Pentax boasts the same reverse compatibility, allowing for all lenses from all k-mount cameras, 35mm & APS-C compatible with current camera bodies (even the new rumored mirrorless body)!!

The Jena pancolar will need something like this:

Sorry, should have been more precise: every 35mm Nikon camera ever made. As far as I know Nikon only made MF film cameras, not digital. I think you're correct, as the interchangeability could only be possible if every camera shared the largest production mount, which ,IMHO, would add unnecessary cost to the cameras. Thanks for the links, I'm still discovering the site. I find it interesting that I can get A K-5 + Pen. 18-55 + Tamron 17-50 + Pen. 50-135 for the price of a Nikon 70-200 VR2. Problem, Houston?! I'm slightly annoyed at not discovering Pentax when we were buying our first DSLR. Would have had a great kit by now...

And that's why we love Pentax. Now if they had just had a marketing department to tell everyone that. Of course, I suppose if they spent all the money that Canikon does on marketing then they would have to raise prices. Oh well.....
