Vivitar "stovepipe"

I picked up one of these from KEH for 20 bucks. Vivitar (Kiron) 28-85 f2.8-3.8. I think they are referred to as "stovepipe". Anyway, seems like a nice lens, but man is it heavy. Glass looks really good in this one, I've only shot a couple of test shots just to make sure it works. I'm a little afraid of the weight doing damage to the camera body if I put it on a tripod or don't support the lens with my hand. Anyone else have this lens?

If it doesn't work out I can always use it as a weapon against perps and critters.
