Would you trade these lens

I have the opportunity to trade a DA 16-45 for a FA 50 1.7. What would you do?

Well, from a pure fairness perspective, they're right on par with each other in terms of what they typically sell for used (around $225-$250/each).

In terms of what you should do, I guess it just really depends how much you want the 50 and if you have other lenses to cover what you're giving up by trading away the 16-45. Both are great lenses, just very different applications.

makes no sense when you already own an FA 50 1.4.

since you already have a FA 50mm f/1.4 I would not do the trade.

I didn't initially see the OP's signature and that he had a 50/1.4. If that's the case, then I also don't think the trade makes a lot of sense unless you plan to get rid of the 50/1.4 as well.

The 1.4 trumps the 1.7. Don't make the trade.

No kidding. Sometimes being old helps. As a left over from the film days I recall
very well that the 50mm f/2 was the 'kit lens' for the low end K1000,
and the f1.7 was the 'kit lens' for the upscale bodies, with the f/1.4 being
the 'pay extra to get it' choice. Periodically, I see threads about how
wonderful these kit lenses are and I always quietly giggle a little.
And it's not that they were bad. Actually the quality of particularly the 1.7 was in its day very well respected, and if you try hard enough you can always find something to gripe about with an f/1.4 used wide open, but after ending up with
a 1.7 incidently because it came with a 2nd hand camera body I bought, and never having mounted it on a camera, because I couldn't think of an occasion
when I already had a 1.4, I finally cleaned out the shelf and sold it....

the 1.7 is a perfectly good lens, but I am pretty short on reasons for sticking it on the front of my camera if I already own a 1.4.

Fa50/1.7 = $150-200
fa50/1.4 = $250-300
DA16-45 = $250-300

someone shares the same opinion with me.

the new story is many says 16-45>*16-50.
16-45 was once a kit lens for upper model and you have to spend the extra for *16-50.
