Just Scored a Tair-3!

And the LBA continues . I just found a deal I couldn't pass on. I bought a photosniper setup for $50.00.

This comes with a 300mm F4.5 Preset lens (Tair-3) which has a 16 blade aperture. What makes it different though is that in the kit, there is a rifle stock that you attach the lens to. After looking at awesome photos taken with this setup, I could not resist. This lens is HUGE and heavy, but it is extremely sharp wide open. It only has 3 elements, but the IQ is outstanding.

Here's a couple of shots of the lens. First this is the kit. Mine doesn't have the camera body (these are not my photos).

And here it is assembled (not my photo)

I really bought it for the lens itself, although reading about the stock, it seems it really lends to very stable shooting. I'll have to be careful not to use it around people though, they might get the wrong impression

Can't wait for it to arrive!

Pretty cool. That second shot is with it mated to what looks like a Panasonic GH1. With the 2x crop, that's a 600mm!

Yeah, I saw that. I did a search and found a step by step guide on how to take the lens apart and repair it. The aperture seems to stick wide open on a few of these lenses. From the repair guide, it looks like an easy fix if you are in any way mechanically inclined.

If it is just that, then it is sure a sweet deal, good luck. Fixing these old lenses are quite exciting. Recently I fixed a Pentax-F 70-210mm, it was fun.

Congratulations, on your score of the Tair 3. It looks like quite a lens.

I really, really want one of these. And, a Tair 11a (which I want more when it comes down to it).

Hoping to see some shots once you get this and get it fixed up!

I've got the plain version without the sniper kit, it's a very good lens.

I've lusted for one of those. My closest approach is a T2 Spiratone 400/5.6 on a shoulder stock. We should not use these when armed officers are nearby. Looks too much like a grenade launcher, eh?

Yeah, I'll only be using the stock in non "urban" environs I'll have it on a monopod when around a lot of people.

Now my only problem is to fabricate a mechanical shutter release that fits over the K-x's shutter button. I wish I had a K5 with the electronic shutter port. That would make it very simple to use just a cheap electronic microswitch coupled to the trigger.

Zenit Photosniper

Photosniper Conversion - a set on Flickr

Some ideas here.

I have a shoulder stock for old mechanical cable release cameras and I'm going to make a short electric cable release, and there's plenty of descriptions here on this site about that, which I'll fix to the frame. Then I'll make an 'arrangement' so the mech' cable will press the two buttons of the elec' cable release. I want that facility because I use mainly manual focus lenses. I'm an engineer with a workshop which helps as this might be a little bit complicated, but I have the design in my head all ready to go.
But for use with auto focus a single button should be OK and the design a lot simpler.

CJ, have you read this post? Looks cheap and easy, I haven't done it yet but it's on my list.

Thanks for the link! I was going to make something similar, just using the tripod mount instead. I didn't know they made a hotshoe mount like that. It will make it that much simpler to make.

Agreed. They're about $2 on Ebay. I'm just trying to think of the easiest way to get the right sized piece of metal, with the minimum cutting/drilling necessary.
