Auto Chinon 50mm f1.4 softness/flare/haze at f1.4 ?

Another eBay impulse buy.

Not a bad lens, but behaves strangely wide open. There is sort of dreamy flare or haze present, this disappears once you stop it down even just half a click to f1.7 (the detents are at f1.4 and f2). Detail is still there though.

The lens is very clear, no internal dust or fungus. Any thoughts as to what is causing this and if anything can be done to cure it ? Even a quite deep lens hood made no difference.

Edit: A 49-28mm step down ring used as a lens hood solves the problem !

It's a combination of "soft" and "pf" when wide open (even with the hood, the amount of light it is sucking in wide open is causing the pf). Shoot it wide open under different conditions (something indoors and min focus distance) and you should see a big difference.

It's caused by opening the aperture all the way, nothing more -- a characteristic it shares with a lot of other lenses. That's why you buy the 1.4s -- so you can get sharp shots at f2! (Whereas an f2 lens is probably soft at f2, etc, at least on these older and inexpensive lenses.)

Actually there is little, if any, pf - beside my wife's scarf being purplish. I've never had a f1.4 and was just surprised at the difference even half a stop down from fully open made. Once you stop it down it is not a bad lens - this one was taken at f5.6 :

There is a bit (almost near same color as scarf see below) and will probably show shooting wide open outside in bright conditions do to lack of coatings. Good lens, I had one for a while, pretty good performer...
