I agree. The fact that it is not a DA* lens would suggest that they might be trying to keep the costs down which would also suggest that the lens would be a 500 f5.6 and not an f4.0 or 4.5. This would make the 1.4x TC somewhat useless since the K5 wouldn't be able to autofocus with the f5.6 + 1.4xTC combination. As far as I know, the K5 doesn't have an f8 sensitive central autofocus point that for example, the Canon 1D series has (and has been dropped with the new 1Dx). Still it is a welcome lens for those of use who've been begging Pentax for years to come out with a super telephoto. I hope it has the same image quality as my DA*300, although it would have been nice to have had the same build quality too!

Im not sure whether the K5 can autofocus up to f8. Wishful thinking for me is that they release the DA500(50) with a K5 replacement at Photokina, that would be great!!

I think they'd still make it a * lens - kind of like they did with the FA* 400 f/5.6. I couldn't picture them making it something less than the current DA* 200 & 300mm's.

My guess's
da550
da50
da18-250
da135-400
da*28-80
da22-35 limited
da12-35
These guesses are close to what I would suspect:

DA500 f5.6 (but still hoping for f4.5)
DA 50 f1.7-2.0 - a cheap 50mm lens that everyone has been wanting from Pentax. Something similar to the 35 f2.4.
DA 18-250
DA 135-400 - really hope it will be in this range. What a great wildlife/hiking lens this will be! A good quality 100-300 f4 like the Sigma would be welcome too.
DA* 18-80 or 24-70 - another lens I would readily buy in place of the 16-50.
DA 21-35 Ltd - an interesting lens too
DA 12-35

A very nice choice of lenses that I can see myself buying 3 or 4 of them.

Wishes for the 2014 roadmap?:

- fast wide angle prime: DA* 20 f1.4
- DA 200 Macro (with limited like build of the DFA100 WR macro)

In past roadmaps, the DA* lenses have been shown as DA* lenses, DA as DA lenses, etc. I expect the supertele will be a DA, as was shown two years ago and is showing now.

I would like to believe that, but why wouldn't they then mark it with an orange dot on the road map like the current DA* 200/300?

And another question: what does the "RC" in the new 1.4xTC mean?

You're probably right, but the original roadmap (DSLR Photography ) showed the 200 & 300 as DFA's (no star). I'll keep hoping.

You've mentioned this a couple times in this thread. Where are you getting that from? I ask that curiously, not confrontationally.

Lens map looks cool. I would definitely pick up the new wide angle zoom if it's weather sealed and on par optically with the existing 12-24. The super long glass doesn't mean much to me personally, but I'm glad those of you who have been waiting for it have something firm to look forward to now.

I would agree with those of you who have suggested the name designations of the lenses really don't mean much at this point. Especially if some of them are meant to be compatible with an upcoming full frame camera (I'm looking at you, DA50 + DA* 18-80).

Why from a market perspective? Marketing to whom? This would not be a professional lens: Pentax AF is not good enough for them to be marketing to pros, in any case. This would be marketed to the crowd that buys those Sigma 500mm zooms, both of which are f6.3. And it wouldn't have to be 6.3. It could be 5.6, 5.8, or 6.1. It just depends on whatever price point Pentax wishes to reach while still maintaining prime quality.

Whatever the max aperture, somebody is going to comeout with a slow long lens at some point. With the light sensitivity of current digital sensors, it makes sense. It's just a matter of improving the light sensitivity of the AF.

As long as I know, DA series lenses are suitable for ASP-C sensors. So this roadmap makes me bit worried, that there is no FF upcoming...

Probably right. I suspect Pentax is going to aggressively try to keep the price down on this lens, to increase sales. Doing away with WR and SDM motor will help toward this end.
