I wish the price for DA limited 40mm f2.8 won't drop. I just bought one. I don't understand why pentax pushed out 2 lens with same focal and max aperture but the MSRP is $250 and $500. They should have big gap in optical otherwise why use a cheaper lens to kill a limited lens

If anything they will raise the price of the DA40
I'm gonna guess the 40XS will be at the same price point as the DA35, maybe just slightly more expensive.

The MSRP of the 40XS is $249.95, the DA35 is $219.95. So the street price for the 40XS should be around $210 in a few months.

And seeing as the DA40 sells for $340 (or less) brand new, I think a price difference of about $125 between the DA40 and 40XS seems about right.

pentax could possibly raise the da40 limited, since essentially the limiteds are the luxury line

I really don't see them raising the price of the DA40. It's a nice lens, well built and obviously very compact. However, it's not all that fast (for a prime in that focal length range) and part of its appeal and popularity stem from the fact that it is somewhat reasonably priced. If the street price were to rise closer to $400-500, I just don't see it selling very well.

Is this lens going to present another unique lens cap issue for a Pentax lens?

That looks like a screw in 27mm lens cap to me.

They have the xs to pick up the slack now. So people who want a slim 40mm pancake would buy the xs, while people with more cash to spare and want the up-spec version would buy the limited. Less quantity sold but higher margin for the limited, more quantity sold but lower margin for the xs. Well, its one of the many path they can take, they could also just leave a $100 gap there and let people decide (ilke someone said people would just save up a bit more and get the limited if they really want to). Or they could make the xs cheaper. Just speculating, i think the smart thing to do would be increase the prices of the limiteds (even though its not something i would want as a buyer).

XS is only for K-01. I guess that XS lens will perform well only with using the opcodes (software correction) not available backwards. This would explain also the very thin design as well. Instead of additional glass to correct distortion software will do this job. I just guess it but maybe I am wrong.

As far as we know the DA40 limited and the XS are the same qua lens design, only the featuers and the body are different and the XS has the newer/better coating.

Pentax said: "We expect a larger series of XS lenses to become available in the near future; these lenses will be extra-compact and are said to only function with the K-01."

So?

Yet Pentax also says on the DA 40mm XS product page.

Hence my initial confusion

5 elements in 4 groups for both looks to be no major difference optically. We'll see.
