Would that round shape aperture blades be better for bokeh? I always wanted to get the DA 40mm but I also have the FA 43mm, this 40mm XS would be good if it is also priced more attractive than the DA 40mm.
After a certain number the blades (5?) the shape of the aperture hardly do anything for bokeh.
Bokeh is then mostly influenced by the optics, what does change is the shape of the highlights of the out of focus blur but the blur won't be smoother or different in another way.

Sony had a nice article on this but they removed it.

Yes, that would be different optics - thank you Monochrome

OK - I just had to comment; after all that obsessive deciphering between DA 40 ltd. and xs, I decided.............to go with the FA 43 :P

Actually, I can see eventually going to the DA 40 ltd or xs in the future after my bank account recuperates; however, I am on a FA drip and cannot let go.
In addition to the optics being improved, the DA 40mm ltd also has Ghostless coatings like all FA and DA LTD series do. I would suspect the XS has the Ghostless Coating but haven't confirmed it.

Sorry for dig the topic!
I live in Vietnam. Today Pentax's dealer said that they sell the DA 40 f/2.8 XS @ ~150USD. Would you think it's a pretty price?

I was wondering about flare. There is no sunhood. Would there be no need for? I see that the front of the lens is just something out.

The only ugly thing I could think of was using a ring (remove the glass):

Travor Close-up Filter +2 27mm - Filters bij CameraNU.nl
You can get a small metal hood from eBay.
I got one and works perfect on those lenses. It looks quite cute too

And I am using the lenses on the K5 ... so I guess it will work on any Pentax DSLR!?
Oh and I have also tried them out on the K10D and ZX-50 film camera ... works without a probelm

Edit:

And as a fun fact, at one of the local photo stores, they've put these lenses on the K1000 and it works!
The lenses are staying wide open and it has very light vignetting, but it takes pics just fine. Should give some interesting results .

In the end it all boils down to a user's preference...

Had the Da 35, Da 40ltd and DA 40 XS...
Sharpness: more or less comparable for the 3 lenses
Built: Hate the 35 mount
FL: prefer the 40 over the 35
In the end kept the DA 40 XS on my K5 95% of the time...
Reasons? weight, fast AF, love the look better than the DA ltd on my k5

I love my da 40, but I do wish that pentax would make a new version of the 40 ltd. One with rounded aperture blades, I like my bokeh round for some reason. That would be awesome if they do because I need the quick-shift for my street photography.
