40 XS vs DA 40

Anyone figured out the differences? Obviously the XS is somewhat smaller... Maybe I missed discussion of this somewhere. And of course I realize that likely it's speculation. Maybe this should be in the rumour forum, but the lens is "real."

Plastic body, no Quick-Shift. That's about it.

Smaller, lighter, cheaper, and much uglier.

If it's the same optical formula, I think the XS is a no-brainer.

Except I was under the impression (although not 100% sure) that you can't use the XS on a regular DSLR. If that's the case, it may be worth the extra money for the backwards compatibility with DSLRs, in addition to the better build and quick-shift feature.

Yeah we really need to get the definitive word regarding compatibility with DSLR for the XS. If it works with DSLRs then it could be great like the DA35 2.4

I agree. If they are backwards compatible (which they might be, as I said above, I'm not 100% certain) then I think it would be a like comparing the DAL55-300 and DA55-300 (optically the same, plastic mount, no quick-shift, no hood).

Thanks for the interesting replies. It does seem like if it is a "DA L 40" then it could have a place (cheaper, lighter, but with some downsides). Though if it were that simple, it might have been nice if they just called it a DA L. Perhaps what we are all really wondering is, "What does XS mean?"

I was wondering about flare. There is no sunhood. Would there be no need for? I see that the front of the lens is just something out.

The only ugly thing I could think of was using a ring (remove the glass):

i have never used a DA40 but isn't it labeled as a FF lens? Maybe the XS version is just for cropped bodies. There was a picture of the DA40xs mounted on a Silver K-5 so who knows if we will be able to use them on our past DSLRs.

You can go to BH and look at the specs and overview of both lenses. These are based on information provided by Pentax.

Pentax DA 40mm f/2.8 XS Lens B&H Photo Video

Pentax SMCP-DA 40mm f/2.8 Limited Series Autofocus Lens 21550

also Pentax Imaging

http://www.pentaximaging.com/camera-lenses/smc_PENTAX-DA_40mm_F2.8_XS_Lens#!product-specs

They both have a 4/5 arrangement,9 aperture blades, .13x magnifications and 15.72 inches minimum focusing distance.

This lens also features a highly aesthetic, minimal design by famed industrial designer Marc Newsom. The low profile measures 0.36" / 9.1mm thick and weighs 1.8oz / 51g. Pentax' SP (Super Protect) coating on the lens surface helps to repel moisture, dust, and dirt while providing greater clarity, contrast, color fidelity. The lens is compatible with the KAF mount and supports autofocus and automatic diaphragm controls.
This seems to indicate that it is reverse compatible.
