Takumar 50mm 1.4 on Craigslist

There's a gentleman on Craigslist selling a Super Takumar 50mm f/1.4. I know this lens is universally worshipped as high quality. What I am unsure of is if it's a good deal. He's selling it at $100, including caps and a case. Also a Canon EOS adapter, but I doubt I'll use it. I don't know anything about the lens other than what's posted, so if you think I would get a good deal to buy it for $100 let me know. This is sight-unseen at this point; if the lens has a damaged filter thread, scratched elements, fungus, etc., obviously that will affect my offer price. Here's the CL Link:

Asahi Pentax Super Takumar 1:1.4/50 M42 screw mount 50mm f/1.4

From my research on KEH, these lenses seem to go for $80 in Bargain up to around $150 in excellent. As I said, he's describing this lens as perfect. The photo provided seems to support this. Input?

If that photo is of the Tak and not a stock photo then it is a 7-element and not an 8-element. KEH has one in EX with caps for $115 so it isn't exactly a bad deal. You could probably make a few bucks back selling the EOS adapter. Just be aware that it will probably have some yellowing if the seller didn't de-yellow it.

Is it SMC? Is this the radioactive one?

How do you de-yellow it if it hasn't been, and how does the yellowing affect image quality? I could see it as an asset; no need for a yellow filter for B&W film

The images are definitely yellow.

Get rid of the yellow in UV light (leave it exposed to the sun for a couple of days) or better : Brian Ayling's photographic repair tips

From the one photo it looks very nice but that's not enough evidence to say. Of course since it is a CL listing you would be able to examine it yourself. If you particularly want the Super-Tak it might be a reasonable price. If all you want is a 50/1.4 in the Asahi Optical formula there are other options in the same price range, including K- and M-series versions.

The only Tak 50/1.4 that isn't Thoriated is the 8-element of 1965. All 50/1.4's made after 1965 until the K in 1975 were Thoriated. De-yellowing is a matter of exposing it to UV. Simplest way is to cover the front element with aluminum foil and the place it in a south facing window with the rear element pointed towards the sun. You can also rig up a box with a UV bulb.

I do want the Tak, not only because I've never experienced a Tak, but also because I may want to get a Spotmatic at some point in the future. There's another guy on CL selling a SP500 with a few lenses in a Pelican case for $50.

Obviously the latter could turn out to be a great deal. If not, with patience you'd have a good chance of scoring a working Spottie with a S-T 50/1.4 for $100 or less.

i'd only pay $100 for the S-M-C version of this lens, not the Super Tak. Offer him $50-60 for that.

Personally, even if you were still considering it, I would pay the 15$ extra to keh and get the 6 month warranty.

7-element non-SMC can be gotten much less. $100 for an SMC version is about right though.
