Lenses recommendations

Hello,

I just bought a new K5 with the DA* 200mm 2.8. I had already the FA50mm 1.4 for my portrait pictures. (That I used with my old K200D.

So I am looking for the best (inside 1500$) zoom lens with focal between 16 to 25mm to 50 to 70mm. The lens needs to have a large aperture and a fast AF capability.

What are your recommendations ?? (Any brands)

Thanks !

Here's a good read:
DA* 16-50mm vs. Sigma and Tamron 17-50mm F2.8 Comparison - Introduction - PentaxForums.com

some other lenses to consider are the sigma 24-70mm f/2.8 EX DG HSM (don't bother with any of the older versions), the tamron 28-75mm f/2.8, and the tokina 28-70mm f/2.6-2.8 (very rare, make sure its the 2.6-2.8 as the other versions arent quite as good). Lastly, there is the very rare, very good and very expensive FA*28-70mm f/2.8.

For few years I used tamron 28-75/2.8. Great lens but what I need was the lens with range below 28mm. I sold my lovely tamron and bought Sigma 17-50/2.7 OS HSM. Very good lens. Rather weak at f2.8, but without abberations and good enough for portraits. It works well on pair with bigger brother - Sigma 70-200/2.8 HSM.

This is a difficult one, in a way. Fast standard Zooms are a bugger to design it seems. None are superb at any price.
The tamron 28-75 or 17-50 are best opticaly. However you lose certain compatabilty with none Pentax lenses.
The auto lens correction will not work ! Also the Pentax has fine tune manual focus whilst on single autofocus and are weather proof and
better made. While the 17-70 F4 is a little cracker but you lose a stop.
You pays your money and make your choice.
I bought the 17-50 tammron but, from now on I shall buy only Pentax.

Thanks folks,

However, by choosing the DA* 16-50mm 2.8, I would like also avoid to have an handicap when I will need to have a focal between the 50mm and my prime DA* 200mm. (At this time I would have choosen a Sigma or Tamron 70-200mm 2.8 instead of the prime pentax 200mm allowing me to cover more focal range. (Sorry for my english)...

The logical choice to add to the 16-50 and 200 is the DA*50-135. Also f/2.8 it is considered one of the finest and most versatile DA* lenses and optically well acclaimed. Aside from that, one of the fast 70-200s are indeed your next best choice. I have the Tamron and cannot speak any more highly of it. The DA*60-250 is also a very good lens but is f/4, which matters in some settings (such as portraiture).

I would just get the Canon EF-S 17-55/2.8 if a fast standard zoom is what I really needed (and I did). A compromise for the Pentax system would be the Tamron SP 17-50/2.8. I would buy from someplace allowing hassle free exchange till I got a good sample. Good luck.

I think he might struggle getting the cannon lens to fit his K5 lol. But yes... the cannon optic i would say is the best in class.
The nikon variant is not that stellar either.
