Keep Fa31 or swap to Fa43 + Da15

Hi all, been following the forum since last spring ever since I got my Kx, just never bothered to post till now.

So as the title says, I'm at the crossroads of letting my beloved Fa31 go so that I can have a bit more variety with the da15+fa43 combo and still have amazing lenses as well. Thr fa31 has been my only lens since I bought in last may and it been an amazing walk around lens, but I am seeing a limitation to having only one lens.

I used to have the A50/1.4, 1.7, but I sold them because I much prefer AF.

My dream kit is the 15/31/43/77, so I will eventually buy the 31 back again in the future.

So I was wondering if you guys would sell or keep the fa31 to fund the purchase of those two lenses?

Knowing that the fa43 will replace it as the general walk around and portrait type lens + the 15 just for being an amazing UWA like many of you have portrayed in te mind control thread.

Keep the FA31 mm f1.8. This is a dream lens with great IQ, and the 'perfect' focal length. When I need one prime (only), the 31 mm is the ideal choice, with a great focal length for landscape and portrait, fast for low light and outstanding IQ.

My 5 cents...

I have none of these lens, but to only have one lens the 31 would be a great focal length.

I have the 31 and the 43 and the 15 Ltd's ... I will definitely keep them all and even perhaps add the FA 77 Ltd too.

Just a suggestion: keep them all!

make sure you hold out for the price you need when selling, or else the deal will cost you in the long-run when you want to buy the lens back again... or keep saving and just ad to your kit.

I'd rather save up and zoom with my feet for the mean time. Although zooming with my feet near rivers (like the Thames! LOL) can be a bit dangerous.

It depends on what you want to shoot. If you are finding the one focal length limiting and need something significantly wider, then, yes, go for it! That way you will soon have experience with three lenses rather than just one.

IMO, the FA43 is the best lens Pentax has made, with amazing rendering. However the focal length does not suit everyone. If it suits you, cool!

Otherwise, consider stretching to the FA77. 15 and 77 may seem far apart, but depending on your shooting style it may work well. You can always pick up an affordable Vivitar 28mm for "normal" shooting. Or the cheap DA 35/2.4.

I assume you have some money saved already, since buying the 43 and 15 would likely cost more than the price for which you'd sell the 31. Not to mention that buying the 31 back down the road will make the ultimate cost of it ridiculously high (not that it isn't already). So I'd suggest buying the 15 for now and save up for the 43 (or whatever you find suits you best).

The 15mm and 43mm are my preferred kit. I don't have the 31mm, so I can't comment on how that would fit in, but I can say the 15 & 43mm make for an amazing walk-around combo.

Having said that, I'd suggest if you're looking to get the 15 & 43mm, you get the 15mm first and keep the 31mm. You can get the 43mm once you've got the cash saved up. It'll save you money in the long run.

Since you want all 3 then save a little longer for the DA15 and then wait for the FA43 (or FA50 or FA77). I would be interested if those with the FA31/43 feel about having both. Too close?

Some don't like the 40-50 focal length but I like it a lot as a walkaround being a short telephoto making it easy to pick out a small part of the scene. Great focal length when you're with a group and want to take some portraits/semi candids.

Ideally I end up with this: DA15/FA43/DFA100macro as my core lenses with a few MF lenses mixed in for variety.

No, I would not sell it. Keep the FA 31. If you need variety while you are saving more money, just use the kit zoom meanwhile. Selling the 31mm only to buy it back later is crazy, and will likely cost you money as well as hassle. I find 31mm (or my case 28mm) the ideal walkaround length - I would find 43mm fine for specific purposes, but too long for general use. (I find the DA40 often too long, despite its virtues). The DA15 is excellent, but has to be used with discretion.

Another one here in favour of keeping! I am lucky enough to own all three of these lenses and while I would not easily part with any of them, the 31 would be the last to go.

I already had the DA 15 and FA 43 when I found a good offer for the FA 31, and shortly after ordering I got serious doubts about my decision, which lasted till talking my first walk with the lens! There is just something special about it's pictures, the rendering and the colours. The 43 is a great lens, no doubt, but IMO the 31 is superior. Also for general walkaround on digital I think 43mm is just a little bit to long. Everyone has it's own preferences for the perfect FL, but as you are used to the 31 and wrote nothing about the 31 being to wide. I think you also might find the 43 to long.

Also, the FA 31 has not exactly become cheaper in recent years, if you sell it know you might lose quite a bit of money when reacquiring it later!

If I were in your position I would wait a bit longer and get the DA 15 as and addition to the 31. Yeah, it's not easy being patient when seeing the pictures in the mind control thread, I've been there.

As next step to the dream kit I would get the FA 77, and the 43 last.

I will definitely keep FA31 Ltd. It is the right FL for general purpose shots. I don't have DA 43 or 15 Ltd but have a Sigma 50f1.4 for portrait.

I have done close to 9000 shots with FA31. It is just superb!

Get DA15 if you need something wider.

I realize the 31 is amazing in a lot of ways, but I have to agree out the utility of the 15 + 43 combo (although I'm currently using the 15 + 50 due to my tight budget). You can get most everything done with those two lenses and a bit of cropping (interiors, landscapes, snapshots, scenes, portraits, abstracts, low light). These are the only lenses I *really* need (short tele and a moderate wide). I would prefer to have something a little longer than normal, and a wide angle, in comparison to a normal-only option. There is no easy answer, though (unless you are RICH$$$$$$$$$$$)

I would trade for the 43 and 15.
