Manual Lens Suggestions

I have noticed a few threads asking for people's "wish list." One thing that has intrigued me with the Pentax system is the compatibility with older lenses. So, If you were starting out and wanted to find a nice selection of Pentax manual lenses (non screw mounts ), what would they be? No specific application. Any focal length, I just want to get an idea of what is considered good should I run across any.

MSM, I think the best place to start is the pentax lens reviews, there's lots of good information in there on which lenses are good, and which ones to avoid...

Here is my preference and some are currently owned (mainly Pentax-A primes)
A15mm; A20mm; A50mm f1.2; A100mm macro f2.8; A100mm f2.8; A*85mm; A*135mm; A*200mm macro; A*300mm f2.8; A*600mm f5.6; A70-210mm f4.
I used to have some M or K lens but recently all sold away and replaced with the A lens due to my laziness with the dslr metering.

Another disadvantage of K or M lenses for beginners is the camera can not record the aperature value. In order to compare f2.8 shots to your f4.0 shots, you have to remember which is which, you can't just check the file data. That list of A lenses looks good to me.

I really like my A 28 f2.8 on my dslr's. Light weight and still gives a good FOV.

Mark, I have several really great zooms, Sigma 10-20, Tamron 28-75 F2.8 and sigma 70-200 F2.8.

I also have some manual lenses, and am expanding my collection all the time.

What do I look for?

SMC - Pentax, and specifically I am looking for fast lenses for the most part.

My present manual focus collection is:

24mm F2.5 Tamron Adaptall.
50mm f1.4 SMC-Pentax,
100mm F4 SMC-M Pentax Macro,
135mm F2.5 SMC - Pentax,
300mm F4.0 SMC - Pentax
400mmF5.6 MC-Vivitar.

Some of these I have had for a long time, the 125 I just got.

I am also looking for a 100mmF2 and 85mm F1.8.

In general, I am not interested in a manual lens if it is not at least as fast as my autofocus zooms. I am going this route because I like to do low light photography, including indoor performances & sports, and have a real need for the speed. Additionally the fast lenses make for a really bright viewfinder.

One thing to consider, depending on camera is if and when you use flash. K mount lenses are not p-ttl compatible, and as a result, if you want to use them with flash, you will need an *istD or DS (I thnk), but not DL or K series unless you go manual or have a non ttl flash with an auto flash mode. I have kept my *istD for this reason. (along with ISO 3200 capability)

This might leave you searcing for KA mounts, which will cost you more

Don't rule out screwmount lenses Mark.
Some people here prefer them over full K-mount Manual lenses, and they are often less expensive.
Sure you need a $30.00 adapter, but no big deal. You only need 1.

What I'd like to get?

A 20/2.8
A 28/2
A 50/1.2
A* 85/1.4
A* 135/1.8
A* 200/4 Macro
A* 400mm f5.6

I'll generally choose the newer design if the FoV is comparable, so the gaps in that system would be covered by newer FA or DA lenses. The exception is the 400, as it's not a length I use much (Just for the occasional airshow) I'll go for the cheaper A series.

The rest of my planned prime collection looks like this:

DA 14/2.8
FA 31/1.8 limited
DA 35
FA 43/1.9 Limited
FA 50/1.4
DA* 55/1.4 SDM
Voightlander SLII 58/1.4
FA 77/1.8 Limited
D-FA 100/2.8 Macro

It does have some close bunching in the 43-58mm range and the 28-35mm range, but those are ranges where I tend to notice small differences in rendering or FoV. Plus some of these will see use on film.

I saw a guy asking for 250000 yen (2300$) for an A* 135mm f/1.8.
Is this normal or he is just crazy?

Hi Mark

Here are some of my favorite manual lenses

Pentax K 135 F2.5 excellent and fast mid tele, I'd rate the IQ of this lens up there with any of them.

Pentax K 300 F4.0 Despite it's lack of a tripod mount, good hand holdable 300mm and the F4.0 is a bonus!

Zenitar 16mm F2.8 fisheye. Just a great inexpensive FUN! lens.

Pentax A 50mm F1.7, don't have this lens, and I don't really need it as I have a 50 F1.2 and a 50 F1.4, but this is one great little lens. Many consider it to be the best of the fabulous fast 50's. I borrowed a friend's and was very tempted to steal it.

NaCl(of course there are many other lenses out there, check our review database)H2O

You saw this in Japan Yahoo?
If the condition is mint, I would say the price is crazy but the seller is not crazy.
There is always a possibility to buy it by a rich and anxious collector/user.
