SMC Pentax-DA* 50-135mm F2.8 ED [IF] SDM

I am considering purchasing a Pentax-DA* 50-135mm f2.8 [IF]. I have read a few reviews that seem to indicate that the SDM is not reliable. Anyone out there have any experience/comments with lens issues.

Check out the survey results at SDM Reliability Survey Results - PentaxForums.com

I think Pentax quietly improved the motors on the SDM during 2010 and theyre much more reliable now. I recently had to do so much research on this for my DA*16-50 purchase which I got today. Just make sure to get one of those 7 year Mack warranties, theyre quite cheap at around $30 for peace of mind.

Mine lasted for about a day (pre 1910). CR Kennedy in Australia which is the distributer replaced it. Never had any issues with the replacement. It is a sensational lens. It is relatively small. I love the lens for landscapes as well as taking candid photos of people.

I have heard of one person who has some problems with the focus if he hasn't used the lens for a long time, but I haven't had that issue. It would be best to find out how many fail after the first year when it is out of warranty.

I am aware of reports re-SDM failure and I hope I'm not inviting disaster by saying mine has performed flawless over the past 2 years (pre-2010). It is an awesome lens to have, contrasty and sharp, sharp, sharp.

I have had mine since the middle of 2008 and i used it for way over 10000 shots on my K10D and now use it on both K10 and K5. No problems what so ever. Brilliant lens. Ill walk forward or backwards rather than change lens.

Just to present the "other side":
I bought mine in 2008. 13 months later, the SDM started acting up and several months later stopped working completely. Since it was out of warrantee and I was having some health and money problems, I didn't send it for the required repair. However, I still shoot with my K10D and I was able to back the software version down to 1.2 which allows the lens to focus using the screw drive motor in the camera. I haven't looked back yet (and probably won't until I upgrade the camera). The lens focus works fine in screw drive and it is sharp with wonderful colors. I'm actually quite happy with it now.

Which is why I would recommend something like this eBay Australia: Buy new & used fashion, electronics & home d?r

For essentially $24 extra why not? Especially if we dont have an old body to fall back on

I've had mine for just over one year and it works flawlessly. Fast and super sharp. No problem with the SMD. Great lens!

I have had mine for a couple of years now and it gets VERY heavy use. My go to lens for almost everything. Have not had any problems whatsoever with it to date and hope that continues into the future. Only problem I am currently facing is that the rubber grip around the zoom ring is coming loose.

Have had for about one year now, works fine.I think to prevent sdm failure simply don't turn focusing ring while motor is active especially in AF-Cont. mode as doing this instantly overloads it.
