Pentax 24-75mm

I 'snipped' a bit of the pentax lens roadmap (of the faded-in, faded-out orange line that was given for the DA* zoom), imported it to Matlab and normalized for the 'orangeness'.

Here's the results. Depending on your threshold of orange required to be an 'actual' lens, we could have a 16-85, a 20-80, a 24-76, or a 28-72 lens. Just looking at the chart, the 24-76 seems most likely to me. Actually a graphics error seems likely at that point, and I'd guess a 24-75mm.

That's messing with my head. If this is a DA* 24-75mm, assuming it would be f/2.8, it would be the exact fullframe-equivalent of the 16-50mm. I don't see much use of this focal length on APS-C (having had a Tamron 28-75). And if they were to bring out a fullframe model, this would be a very important lens. So... maybe it is coming?

As an APSC focal range though not quite as wide as i'd like it actually is a very useful range. the 50 of the 16-50 is just a lttle to short to be the perfect walkabout. I use a 24-70 Sigma and It is pretty close to ideal (aside from weight size, primes are spoiling me for that)
If it is built for apsc instead of FF the smaller image circle will make it an excellent all round lens thanks to the weight reduction it would see
Hopefully though it is a FF lens preparing for the FF camera we know is coming at the same time

That was my thought! Perhaps I'm being a bit too optimistic but I think it's a 24-75 full-frame; I hope/think they're fibbing to us calling this a DA*.

As long as it doesn't have a rotating front element like the FA*28-70......

IMO all of the orange is included in the focal length. The orange clearly extends below 20 and above 80, so I'm expecting a 16-85mm.

True, but I wouldn't want to miss the wideangle. It's the reason I sold my Tamron and went with the 17-70. 24mm is wide than 28, but still not so wide. Unfortunately my 17-70 has other problems, but that's a different matter.

Anyway, I probably wouldn't buy a FF model. Too expensive, and I like the smaller size and less weight of APS-C bodies. But it would be reassuring to know it's there, just in case.

That would be an interesting APS-C lens. It'd be like the 18-135 but with larger aperture/better IQ?

It just seems very close to the intent of the 18-135, though (and of course I'm being a bit lighthearted and quite optimisitc), so I'm still expecting this to be the 'first' full-frame zoom.

Perhaps I'm being a bit too optimistic but I think it's a 24-75 full-frame; I hope/think they're fibbing to us calling this a DA*.
