Gosh I hate following RioRico on lens threads..

My best zoom is the Rikenon XR 70-150 f/4. Other than occasional flare issues due to its old coating it takes excellent images, very prime-like IQ ('primal'?) and it makes the SMC-M 135/3.5 expendable.

My best prime.. hard to say. Probably the Sears 50/1.4, but the Rikenon 28/2.8 and SMC-M 40/2.8 are also excellent. I expect of the three the pancake 40 will get more use.

It is amazing to me that one can buy a lens as good as the following for under $100, provided one is willing to manually focus and use M mode:
Pentax-M 50mm f/1.4 or 1.7 (A version too)
Pentax-M 50mm f/4 macro
Pentax-M 28mm f/3.5

But my favorite lens under $100 is the Pentax-F 35-70, a perfect "backyard" lens. Normal to tele to catch the kids, macro mode for the flowers. Love it.

the best money I ever spent on a lens under a 100 bucks would easily be the Auto-Takumar 55 f2. small (like rangefinder lens small), lightweight, very unique signature, lots of aperture blades, excellent IQ and sharpness. great colours on digital due to the lack of multi-coating. a true gem. a tiny 46mm gem, but a true gem.

Of my 233 lenses (current count, according to my database) just 12 cost over US$100, and another 41 aren't really mountable as objectives on my K20D (TCs, auxiliaries, short-register, etc), leaving 180 to qualify for this list. Earlier (a few pages back) I listed maybe a dozen gems costing under US$13. If I raise the limit to US$100, that expands to several dozen glorious hunks of glass, including all my Takumars (13), Schneiders (8), Vivitars (12), Meyers (8), Tokinas (8), Russians (13), macros (4), etc. Y'all don't want to see that list and I don't want to gen it. Suffice to say that stupendous deals are still to be found, if ye but work at it.
Yes, there certainly are bargains. Sometimes it's possible to snipe things on Ebay, but my greatest finds have been in thrift stores and miscellaneous second-hand places in small communities. Takes patience but it's fun. For example, I've picked up several nice SLRs with lenses in the $5-$25 range. ME Super with A 50/1.7, Olympus OM-2 with 50/1.8, various Spotmatics, MF Canons and Minoltas, etc. All in good working order.

To be somewhat on topic, my favourite cheap lens is a K 35/3.5. Super sharp. A bit slow for easy viewing with crop sensor viewfinders, but fine on my film bodies. $40.

I don't buy manual lenses - can't focus worth a damn, so mine are limited. But here goes:

Pentax F 35-70mm f3.5
Tokina AF 35-70 f3.6
Phoenix 28-210mm
Promaster 100mm f3.5 macro

The Phoenix I picked up for $45 brand new off of eBay. If I had spent $150 on it, I would have been okay with it. It's not a great lens, it has lots of purple fringing... but it's a wonderful zoom range, it's actually reasonably sharp, and the color rendition is amazing. I really like the lens a lot more than I thought I would. I only bought it to see how bad a $45 lens was... and was really quite surprised.

The Promaster 100mm f3.5 is one of my very favorite lenses. Super sharp... but finding one for the magic $100 mark is tough. Seems like right after I bought mine, prices skyrocketed. This is the same as the Pentax branded 100mm f3.5, just without the coatings.

The Pentax F 35-70 is a gem of a lens, I picked mine up for $17 with a fungus problem. Disassembled and cleaned it myself, and it's a very nice lens. It's better than the Tokina, which has some odd bokeh and can't focus as closely, but the Tokina is also a great lens. Very solidly built, and quite sharp. I paid $75 for it attached to a camera body.

Charles.

That's exactly what I do....I haunt the charity shops, junk shops and house clearance auctions. I've got about 70 lenses and 30 cameras ( 8 different systems ) now and other than my K10 and Sony NEX5 there isn't a single camera that I've bought new in 40 years of loving photography, and the only new lens I've ever bought is the DA50--135. Last week I bought a mint Olympus OM1 with 3 very good lenses for £10 ( UK ) a Series 1 Viv' 70-210 and a Mamiya rangefinder for another £10 in a different shop.
My best lens under $100 ? I think my whole M42 collection, about 26 lenses, actually cost me about the hundred bucks, so I'll go with a bunch of very cheap and some very good glass. ( And I walk away from knocked about or fungused equipment )

All my lenses under $100 are favorites and I have a lot! Even my 7 yo is starting to wonder why I have so many and love them all!

If I were going to pick just one, my vote would be for the Pentax M 75-150/4.0, very very good IQ for the bang, relatively compact, and if the Pentax A 35-105/3.5 (which I have) can be called a "stack of primes", I think the 75-150 is right there....

Good thread re: the 75-150: Lens SMC Pentax M zoom 75-150mm f/4

Pentax-M 50mm f1.4 = $30. Very sharp, very fast, and nice build quality.

Pentax-A 35-105mm = $60. Sharpest zoom I've ever used. Also, built like a tank.

Promaster 100mm f3.5 macro = $60. Terrific macro lens for peanuts. Tack sharp, no CA or PF that I can see, and gorgeous color. MF version of the "Plastic Fantastic".

Pentax DA 10-17mm fisheye zoom = $50. Super-fun! Takes great photos with superb color.

I picked up a FA 28-105 for less than $60 shipped. I don't know if it's going to replace my F 35-135 as a walking around lens yet.

The best lenses under $100 that I've bought in the past 3 years:

Pentax F 35-70/3.5-4.5
Pentax FA 100-300/4.7-5.8
Pentax F 50/1.7 - $20.00! Came on a MV with broken hot shoe.

wow some very good AF deals here (I never find good deals on AF for some reason)

Best under $100 for me could almost be best under $20 (there are a few others under a hundred but these had the biggest bang for the buck
M28 f3.5 about $13
M50 f1.7 - $15
M200 f4.0 - $14 or so

my SMC tak 50 1.4 was about $35
the 55 f1.8 was about $25

for me it's more what lenses did i spend more than $100 on (not many - whereas I have 17 manual focus lenses for Pentax after selling a couple off, and not one cost more than $100, most cost less than $60 - only 3 are less than very good- excellent) the highest price ones were driven up by the shipping cost

Auto Focus I've never spent less than $100 since none of the primes i'd want ever seem to show up in that range
