Hm, I've never heard one before in person - that is quite "loud" if we're talking about silent.. anyone else with a 18-135 can comment?

It's even louder than my odd little Sigma 17-70 F2.8-4 with it's weird HSM.

FWIW, the Tessars on the old Zeiss Super-Ikonta folders used front cell focusing.

Personally I can't understand Adam's comment on the DC being quieter than SDM .. but then I only have one SDM lens (DA*300) so maybe other SDM lenses are noisier... as the DA*300 is, for all intensive purposes, silent !

I've for the 18-135 and DC motor is pretty quiet but still audible and it sounds like a motor whirring which it is obviously.
It sounds just like the clip above but a bit quieter than the video in real life. Depends on the volume you play it at.
The only sounds the SDM on a 300mm makes is a very quiet high pitched noise when it moves and a very quiet "tik" as it stops or changes direction . Quieter than DC.
Both DC and SDM are lot quieter than screw drive of course.
Screw drive isn't really intrusive unless it racks fully in & out.

When I first received 50-135, I honestly thought I got a lens with malfunctioning SDM. It was so quiet (compared to other lenses I've been using, mostly fa50 1.4).
I still have to pay close attention to the af beep sometimes to know when to squeeze the shutter.

After using the 18-135mm a little more since I got it, I'll take back what I said.. I'm not that disappointed after all. It does make a good walk around lens (I told myself I was only going to buy prime lenses from here on out) but I couldn't resist. My only problem with this lens is that the bokeh is not that great, but I expected that buying this lens. See why I wanted to go prime from here on out? Lol. But a good everyday use lens nonetheless. Another plus is now if the room I was in was completely quiet, It's probably audible up to 2 ft away only. I definitely like that people across the room can hear it, unlike those screw drive lenses, which is the plus about having this.

I do hope Pentax at some point re-release a lot of their popular lenses with the DC motor and dare to not touch the price with that.. if anything, and just my humble opinion, they need to drop the prices on some of these lenses too... especially since many of us have been loyal since we ever picked up a Pentax

Ok so on that note, the 18-135mm will serve its purpose until I can finally afford the whole DA* lineup.....
