vivitar series 1 70-210mm ver 1 vs ver 2?

I was just wondering if anyone knew how the the different versions compare? I already have the version 2 and it is fine. I may have a chance to get the ver 1 cheap. I have found lots of info on specific version, but not much comparing them side by side for image quality. The ver 1 seems to have lesser resolution and contrast than the version 2 (except for contrast at 210mm f8 and in the center only). Of course technical tests like that are not everything. The ver 1 would gain me better macro (1:2.2
vs 1:4 on the ver 2 I already have).

So does anyone know how they compare?

If you can get version 1, get it. Version 1 of this lens is the Kiron build with excellent optical qualities and fantastic macro capabilities (3.5 CA w/ 1:2.2 macro ratio) - optically it is as good as the version 3, the 2nd version of the version 3 trumps all others due to speed and the addition of the "A" contacts; the version 1 is also a highly regarded lens; also, version 1 is the only one with a 1:2.2 macro ratio...

Thanks a lot. I appreciate the info. If I can get it cheap enough I'll grab it.

Version 1 is absolutely brilliant, and a heavy brute at 880g. Using it is good exercise.

Crazy good (and fun) when using with extension tubes.

One of the best things I like about this series is the push/pull zoom, as long as it is smooth with your copy you can combine the use of CIF with this lens to near effortlessly (by using slight up/down motion of your thumb on zoom barrel) snap insect(s) macros in flight with precision; a really good well designed lens.

The following is a comparison: of version1,2,3 (MODERN PHOTOGRAPHY results). www.robertstech.com/vivitar.htm

Having used version 2 and 3 extensively and held version 1, version 2 and 3 are much easier to use/carry. Version 1 is historically very important.

Version 3 in my opinion is significantly better than 2--and thus 1 from the modern photo tests.
