1.4/55 SDM looking for a friend

My 55SDM is looking for a friend. A SDM wide angle lens with similar aperture or any large aperture that can take the same filters. A companion for a two lens setup. A classical combo. The 55 only has big brothers and is craving for a little brother or sister.

Your DA* might have to consider adoption. The Sigma 30/1.4 meets all its wishes except the SDM part, and you'd need a 62-58mm stepdown ring to use the same filters, but it is fairly quiet and rather accurate at focusing. I think that they could put apart their differences long enough to at least meet, right?

You aren't going to find a wide angle SDM lens with the same filter size - the only SDM wide angles are the 16-50 and the 17-70.

Sigma has HSM wide angles, but they also cannot take the same filters. So you are going to have to give up something along the way...

I'd like to see a lens like this as well...
Something like 25/2 perhaps...

I often pair up my DA*55 with the SIGMA 30mm f/1.4, they make a great fast combo!
Although the 30mm is screwdrive AF and has a bigger filter thread (62mm)

Also sounds like the FA*24mm f/2 is right up your alley. But it is also screwdrive AF and has a even bigger filter thread at 67mm.

I often use my Sigma 30mm f/1.4 together with the DA* 55mm f/1.4 and I have to agree they make an excellent combo.

I used to use FA*24+DA*55 combo. Worked really well for me as I couldn't care less about the filters

Filters are just the cream... the FA 2/24 is an option, but it's an eBay lens. Someboy forgot to reformulate this lens for APS-C. The lens could also be smaller for APS-C and benefit from SDM focus...

30mm is too long currently the 55 hangs around with the Pentax 31 - they are good pals, but not the perfect match. My Pentax lenses will not become friedns with Sigma lenses - with the exception of some tele lenses.

Don't be fooled here.
Although the 55 has DA mark, it's been confirmed as FF capable.
FA*24 isn't big! Touch fatter than 55 but not really longer. With hoods on the 55 is way longer. 24 vs 31 - without hood the 24 is the same length but fatter, with hood the 24 is bigger. All three weigh just about the same. Just look at my avatar, 55 is on K-7 and the silver lens is 24. It'll give you an idea.
24 wouldn't benefit from APSC only make over, it would display more vignetting if anything. Coatings don't need upgrade either, together with it's big brother FA*28-70, they were 2 lenses with best colours and contrast I have used on K mount! Damn, how stupid am I for selling them

And I agree 31+55 is a good match but not perfect, 55 goes better with 24 IMO and 31 goes better with 77 (maybe 70 would do too...)

The FA20/2.8 is another option but harder to find than the FA*24 and a stop slower. I think the FA*24 is your best bet, you do see one come up for sale on this site every month or so, so if you're patient you should get a copy for a reasonable price. That's how I got my FA*24, axl was good enough to sell me his, I was more than happy to take off his hands knowing it was a good copy

I've only had it a short time but can confirm the colours and contrast are superb, as is the centre sharpness even at f/2. I think it's worth searching out.

Well, I probably need to get the 2/24 FA until Pentax presents a large apeture wide angle. Keeping the FA31 as the widest large aperture lens is a shame. A large aperture DA 31 mm lens would also help :-)

Still looking at PENTAX for a solution.
