Lens Choice for New K-5

I am finally going to order my new K-5 in the morning. This will be my first DSLR and I am excited, but there is so much to learn. The information on this site has been very helpful already!

I have decided to pass on the kit lens and purchase the Tamron 17-50mm f 2.8 lens as my first lens, but have a question before I place my order. The reference to this lens on this site refers to this lens as: Tamron AF 17-50mm F2.8 XR LD Aspherical IF SP

BHPhoto links to this lens: Tamron 17-50mm f/2.8 XR Di-II LD Aspherical [IF] Autofocus Lens for Pentax, and my question is regarding the DI-II designation in the latter. Are these the same lens?

I see the notation that says: Di-II lenses cannot be used with digital SLR cameras using image sensors that are larger than that of an APS-C size imager (e.g. 1D series) and just want to verify that this does NOT apply to the K-5. I have read the sensor description but I guess I am not understanding it.

Thank you in advance for your help!

Yes that lens will work on all the digital Pentax cameras as they all have the smaller sensors. It would not work on the Pentax film cameras that is to say it would not cover the entire frame. So yes to the K5

Welcome to the forum.

The K-5 has an APS-C sensor, which is a type of cropped sensor, smaller than those found in full-frame cameras. This lens is optimized to work with these cropped sensors. If Pentax ever releases a full-frame, this lens, if it works at all, will be heavily compromised. This is true of all the Pentax DA lenses though. They were also designed to work with APS-C sensors.

I have that lens by the way and it's a great performer. Paired with your K-5, you'll be taking a lot of great shots.

Welcome to the forum!

You may have done your research already but just in case, the Tamron 17-50 is an excellent lens but it is not weather sealed as the K5 or DA* lenses. If you can afford it the 18-55WR is cheap enough and may be worth keeping around in case you find yourself shooting in a location where weather sealing is a must. Just my 2C.

The Tamron 17-50 is an excellent choice. I use one with my K20d and my Nikons. It is a really sharp lens. Also, I agree with the advice for the 18-55 WR as it will allow you to go out during inclement weather and shoot images.

In temperate zones, I use my Tamron 17-50 in the rain and snow,
making use of shelters, umbrellas, or wiping the lens barrel if it got drops on it.
(We had a recent thread about this.)
Dust storms, "yellow sand," or similar conditions might justify WR.

Yep, excellent lens. I use it for critical landscape shooting below 50mm, where I switch to an A50/2.8.
