Well that is exactly what I did. I knew that the Tamron had a better warranty, but I have yet to send back any lens because of a defect (knock on wood). So I went with the nicer looking Pentax model (completely subjective). But you are correct, either or would do the trick.

One thing I do miss oddly is the cute little filter hatch Pentax has on many of their lens shades. It is missing on this lens. Just more proof that its a rebadged Tamron in my opinion.

Interesting...on Amazon.com today and see the Tamron is actually cheaper than the Pentax by $25.

Those links now show the Pentax $16 cheaper than the Tamron.

perhaps those prices fluctuate as I am still seeing the Tamron cheaper, but this time only by $6.

I just got the Pentax version. Since I'm just getting started, I thought I would stick with Pentax branded lenses. Just a quirk on my part. One difference I read about is the mount. The Pentax has a metal mount (which it does, I checked) and the Tamron has a plastic mount. That one I don't know for sure. Does it matter?

It does matter and the Tamron does not have a plastic mount...It is indeed a metal mount.
Is the pentax version a macro lens?

Exactly.
Had Samys camera had both lenses in stock at the same time, I would have likely choses the pentax ONLY because of the ''pentax'' logo..Thats it.
They come off the same manufacturing line. I still prefer the Pentax logo.

As for the 18-250 and both lenses. The Pentax must have some sort of a different glass coating. I have seen no flare on the P and a bit on the T.

I use both of them quite a bit of the time. Still deciding on which one to sell off. Have to wait for spring to break before that decision is made.

From everything I have seen and read, both lenses are exactly the same, even the coatings...But really at the end of the day, it does not matter.
